Flexibilidad del budismo

La estricta disciplina que demandan las Enseñanzas del Buda tiene pruebas de fuego aun entre los más devotos. Siendo Lama Surya Das uno de ellos, EL DESPERTAR DEL BUDA INTERIOR muestra como la flexibilidad puede llegar a ser inevitable y como la eliminación del sufrimiento y de la desarmonía toma prioridad sobre los preceptos. A más de ser un excelente compendio de budismo, este libro es divertido. En un capítulo el autor describe la agonía de un grupo de monjes de su tradición cuando su tranquilidad y progreso se vieron amenazadas por insectos poco agradables. La balanza entre el precepto de "no matar" o la rendición ante una invasión de cucarachas se inclinó a favor de los monjes. La decisión a favor de la comunidad y de la necesidad de meditar y predicar es un excelente ejemplo de flexibilidad en la interpretación de la doctrina. Y, como está escrito en otro capítulo, la opción de no tener que creer en la reencarnación como adhesión imprescindible para ser un budista genuino es una buena muestra de flexibilidad. El Buda y el autor expresan que, con el recorrido serio del camino noble, el practicante llega a vivenciar la realidad del renacimiento sin necesidad de hacer de esta noción una creencia. Como lo expreso en mi libro "Hacia el Buda desde el occidente", yo no estoy allí y, en consecuencia, no creo en el renacimiento. Mi aceptación de la reencarnación, si intentara convertirme en su vocero, sería una creencia (una opinión incorrecta). Me siento tranquilo, sin embargo, que eruditos como Lama Surya Das abran el espacio para la belleza de las Enseñanzas sin la necesidad de recurrir a ninguna clase de dogmas.

Not for the Wargamer or Military Historian

This Atlas is too general for the Military Historian and wargamer, but is a nice worldwide historical overview. It does have some good political maps, but there are not a lot of them, and they are only snapshots far apart in time. When I think of an Atlas I think of page followed by page of maps. This book is mostly text with many illustrative maps, and lots of non-map pictures. It is not as detailed as some other historical Atlases. I do not mean to disparage this work, it is a very good, very colorful overview, and puts military history in context. It is not however, a book that will provide informative maps for the Military Historian, or gaming enthusiast. Definately a book to check out of the library, It would be a good buy as a color paperback, unfortunately I paid for a hard copy.

Excellent reference

This book, and its companion, covering The Middle Ages, 768-1487 and Renaissance to Revolution, 1492-1792, though with different authors, form an elegant pair of references. They cover a period that is infrequently covered in much detail, and rarely illustrated with any maps, much less the excellent examples here. My primary use for these books is as aids when reading both history and, even more, historical fiction such as Sharon Kay Penman, Dorothy Dunnett and Neal Stephenson. These authors write intricately plotted tapestries that rely heavily on movements in historical time, but their publishers include only incidental maps. These volumes supply a much needed reference for readers who are not quite au courant with the 3rd Anglo Dutch War, or the rise of Maratha India. The accompanying text gives an adequate survey of the time, but the primary emphasis is `rightly on the illustrated portion. The maps are beautifully designed, and easily deciphered, covering both individual battles and broader strategic concepts.

Brilliant and provoking

Black's clear advantage was that the timeline span of the subject was avoided by most historians, probably because it's difficult to compile into a single piece of work. But, Black have done it in a fashion, arguably, very original than most historical atlases.
The special maps and themes are divided into daunting blocks of adventure and you'll not stop until the last pages. There are new insights into the clashes between Portugal and Utsmani Devlet in and around the Indian Ocean.
Let's hope more works come out from this author, at least from the Cambridge Series. In the end, you'll wish the pages were much longer as your thirst grew unbearable.

Hugely enjoyable books

This is our son's favorite book series. The original one not only had him hooked but turned him into a voracious reader. The books are smart, fun, and clever and leave out things that make parents cringe. He loves them so much that he created a birthday party theme around the books that was a blast. I highly recommend The Notebook of Doom to parents to start reading to your kids or as a great start into chapter books for them on their own.

Lots of fun

We love these books at our house. My son started reading them when he was in second grade and they have become a favorite with all of our children. Even my one and three year olds sits and listens when we read them. They are not scary. They are clever and fun. I even enjoy them. The back days they appeal to first through third grade but I think it is more than that. They are easy enough for a first or second grader to read by themselves.

This is a great series of books and this one continued with the great line of characters, plot and more. while you might first think that this was scary with a title like it has, but do not be scared off by the title, as it actually is very fun-loving. The book is so well written and is a very fast paced book that you and your kids will plow through in no time.

Faith n' begorah!!

Something very weird is going on at Bailey Elementary School. It's plenty weird enough when you think your teacher is a vampire from the Transylvanian mountains, but what are you supposed to do when your substitute gym teacher seems to be a leprechaun??
Eddie, Melody and the gang are back in this, the 4th installment of the Bailey School Kids series, and as per usual, they're up to their old tricks... Especially Eddie.
Mr. O'Grady is from Ireland, and is perhaps the shortest, most wrinkled man in the world. But boy, can he dance a jig and play basketball!! Why, it's almost magical the way he moves so fast and gets that ball through that hoop so easily! And what's with that bag of jewels he's always carrying with him?? Strange things seem to happen when he touches them...
The Bailey School Kids series has by now established itself as fun, fast-paced series where unusual things happen to the third grade gang. The most fun for young readers will be that nothing is explicitly spelled out for the reader: Mr. O'Grady COULD be a real live leprechaun (and their teacher COULD be a real vampire), or he could not be. A good deal of the evidence points to "yes!" but not enough to be100% sure (although, by the 4th book, if you've read them in order, you're starting to get a sinking feeling that there ARE mythical/supernatural creatures visiting the school).
This book is less creepy or scary than the first two have been, and is much more light-hearted and fun. Therefore, it's a good choice for beginning readers who are easily spooked. It's a fast-paced read as well, which will snag the interest of even reluctant readers.

Leprechauns Don't Play Basketball

This book is about a strage new Irish gym teacher for the Baily School kids. The problem is that he is a leprechaun who wants to steal something from Miss Jeeper. Can he get it? Other kids my age would like this book because it is fun and exciting. My favorite part was when the kids found out that the gym teacher was a leprechaun.

This is a really good Bailey School Kids story. The fact that the leprechaun can do more basketball tricks than all the other kids is hilarious. Overall it was good. But please be aware that when you read this story it triggers your mind into thinking leprechauns are real but they really aren't. If that happens to you my suggestion is to read one chapter of the story each day then you won't think that leprechauns are real.
