Jennifer Louden, best-selling author of The Woman’s Comfort Book and personal growth teacher

Soon she joined the ranks of the walking depressed: working, volunteering, and looking after her family, all while profoundly unhappy.

Alison found the path out of depression by following her desires—to write, to travel, to become a mother and a creativity coach. Eventually she left ordinary life behind. Her husband quit his job and they sold their house and headed out on an open-ended trip around the world with their kids, aged five and three.

Alison’s story of recovery and adventure is interspersed with coaching questions and exercises, which help readers take their own steps toward happiness.

From a honeymoon in Newfoundland, through two adoption trips to China, and on a year-long sojourn in Malaysia and Holland, come along with Alison Gresik on a heroine’s journey to joyful creativity.

journeying through the depths and breadths of human experience
By Lori Claerhout
I finished reading, tears streaming down my cheeks, with fist pumped in the air for the labyrinthine journey of the heroine. For the journey of Alison, and her way-finding. Alison's writing style brought me in from the start. I was curious about this studious and proper young girl, and wanted to know, "Will that shell crack?" "Where will she find happiness?" "Where will she find fulfilment?" And, "Seriously, are there people who stick it together from first teenage kiss through marriage and families and moves and kids and unwellness?"

And what I discovered was depths and breadths—the expanse—of human experience. Some of us journey geographically; some, internally; others, interpersonally; and beyond. I felt the intensity of Alison's journeying through all of it, and felt invited along. I felt like I was tasting spicy chicken curry along with the protagonists, feeling the heat of the sun in Penang and the breeze-on-skin while biking the Netherlands. I felt hope in the possibilities of doing what I want to do, of finding the friendly guide in resistance on my own river-path. Now, I feel delighted by the travel story, inspired by the heroine story, and invited to try the flow exercises. I empathize with the physical and mental unwellness—like I could reach out and touch it from the writing—and understand how these moments can be guides toward our better lives.

In a word, I feel touched. And I have been well entertained along the journey.

like having the older sister I didn't luck into having ...
By Ariane Khachatourians
I just finished reading Pilgrimage of Desire (I received a free copy to review), and I can only feel upon finishing it that it was written just for me. Of course it wasn't, but it really felt I was reading one very long letter written to me by a trusted confidante slightly ahead of me in years, like having the older sister I didn't luck into having divulge all the details of how she worked through these questions herself. It tackled so many subjects that in my mid-30's I've been having to face and find my way through: health struggles, my relationship with my parents, the question of whether (and how) to have children, and how to stop living for others and create a creative life that actually serves my needs and desires. The thing that struck me most while reading Pilgrimage of Desire was how intentionally the author lives her life. Her use of metaphor and spirituality as guiding forces to create meaning is something I very much lack in my own life, though I was never really aware of it before now. This book has given me a lot to think about, and will certainly stay with me for a long time to come.

An intimately told story of depression and family and travel and desire
By CLK
This is an intimately told story of one woman's examination of depression, motherhood, daughterhood, faith, home, desire and creativity -- all while travelling abroad with her young family and writing a book. It's the pleasure of travel memoir with the added texture of creativity coaching exercises at the close of each chapter. It's unlike any book I've ever read and I have a feeling there are parts of it I will always remember. (For starters, that beautiful scene in the labyrinth!)

Pathways to Wholeness: Archetypal Astrology and the Transpersonal Journey (Muswell Hill Press), by Renn Butler

The exploration of the psyche in non-ordinary states of consciousness provides access to powerful transformative experiences that can lead us towards a more complete experience of being human [the realization of a deeper identity] while also yielding extraordinary insights into the ultimate nature of reality. In this book, Renn Butler explains how to use archetypal astrology as a guide to the transpersonal journey. Described by Stanislav Grof as “the Rosetta Stone of consciousness research,” archetypal astrology is based on a correspondence between planetary alignments and archetypal patterns in human experience. Here, by drawing on the work of Grof and Richard Tarnas, Butler systematically describes the archetypal themes and qualities associated with each of the major planetary combinations studied in astrology and considers how these themes might manifest and be supported in deep psychological self-exploration. Based on thirty years of research, Pathways to Wholeness is an indispensable reference book for explorers of the inner worlds. Pathways to Wholeness: • Explores the intersection between Grofian transpersonal psychology and archetypal astrology • Describes the nature of the planetary archetypes in astrology • Explores the archetypal meaning of all the main planetary combinations as applied to everyday life, perinatal psychology, and transpersonal experience • Provides illuminating case studies and vignettes • Illustrated with mandala drawings.

An important contribution
By Richard Tarnas
The author has performed a great service for that special category of readers who are seriously involved in the exploration of consciousness, and who have become convinced that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in the conventional philosophies of the modern world view and mainstream psychology.

The book is based on research that has been taught and studied during the past thirty years in graduate school seminars and public lectures. This is the first book to set forth the basic outline of that research for a larger public. The writing is clear and accessible. The spirit of the book is modest and compassionate. Describing systematic correlations between experiences in non-ordinary states of consciousness and planetary cycles, the author has also included his own insights and impressions after decades of work in this field. The resulting book is an invaluable guide for all those courageous individuals and therapists who are engaged in exploring the unfolding mystery of the psyche and its relationship with the greater cosmos.

Persistence, Patience, and Competence Rewarded - How the Whole exceeds the parts
By K. Sloan
After many years of careful research, practice, and offering workshops for others, Renn Butler has delivered a very important book about the core of the journey of self-exploration and self realization in the context of holotropic states of consciousness. We are not just the sum of our personal biographic experiences - we are unique expressions of the play of universal archetypes that work through us and with us.Want to understand yourself better? Then get this book.

LAYMAN PASCAL'S REVIEW:
By John de Greef
The fault (wrote William Shakespeare in 1599) lies not in our stars but in ourselves. Renn Butler is a little more daring in his book when he explains that our “stars” are actually in our psyches. They are our selves. Primitive patterns, deep within our unconscious minds, which are mysteriously resonant with the evocative mythic imagery which our archaic ancestors linked to the vast cycles of planets in our nearby solar system -- Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the rest. This is an undeniably exciting possibility for study.

Mr. Butler’s book PATHWAYS TO WHOLENESS presents an informed and engaging investigation that asks us to put aside our obsession with direct causality and delve unabashedly into the juicy domain of meaningful coincidences. Looking through this lens, we discover consistent synchronicities between the behaviour of vibrating celestial objects and our most vulnerable states of mind. In infancy, dreams & psychedelic explorations we are like ancient seafaring explorers tossed about in a chaotic ocean. We would be wise to make use of heavenly objects to help us navigate through our life-struggles and reach the promised shores of satisfying personal transformation. Better maps make better journeys.

The author offers us not only his rich lifetime of experience and expertise as a Holotropic Breathwork facillitator but also the benefit of his personal association with such luminous thought leaders as Stanislav Grof & Richard Tarnas. Taken in conjunction these two men have opened up a fascinating new field of psychological study that Mr. Butler calls: holotropic astrology.

This new genre of self-exploration makes use of Grof’s famous holotropic and psychedelic methods which are designed to put people in contact with lingering psychological traces of the various phases of their birth process and from even deeper transpersonal realms. And it adds to these methods the laudable work that Tarnas has made to popularize a more integrative form of astrology -- one that moves beyond the silliness of newspaper horoscopes into the far more robust territory of Jungian archetypes and the transits of planets.

Archetypal astrology. Psychedelic therapy. Psychological death and rebirth. Famous cultural figures. Pathways to Wholeness is loaded up with provocative elements and stars of all kinds. One of my favorite features is the astrological data provided for quotable sources (e.g. Buckminster Fuller > Neptune conjunct Pluto 4° 39’). Very intriguing stuff. Another nice feature is the presence of personalized case studies showing how holotropic astrology operates in people’s real lives. This book will surely make an excellent reference for those already familiar with these topics and provide an illuminating introduction for those who are not.

Our souls, we might say, wait in the future for us to reclaim the forgotten potencies that overwhelmed us in the past. Until we integrate these residual complexes within ourselves they will continue to exert strange influences upon our world. Many personal and collective human difficulties might simply be the unintentional and ongoing replay of these primal patterns. And if that is true then we may be forgiven for speculating that the very fate of the world, in some sense, hinges upon the sort of emerging insights which underlie Pathways to Wholeness.

Thanks, I've been: Layman Pascal.

American Women Didn't Get Fat in the 1950s: Diet Secrets From Slimmer Times, by Averyl Hill

Have you ever noticed when looking at old photos, vintage media or perhaps from your personal recollections that women in the 1950s seemed much thinner than today?

Some key differences: 1950s: Women aged 20 - 39 years were, on average, thin. If you were fat your doc said: "You eat too much." Calorie consumption hit an all-time low. A 25” waist was a clothing size 10. High fructose corn syrup consumed: None.

Today: Women of all ages are, on average, overweight. Obesity is now a “disease.” Calorie consumption is at an all-time high. A 25” waist is closer to a clothing size “zero." High fructose corn syrup consumed: 76% of corn sweeteners.

Is it really true that American women didn’t get fat in the 1950s? Detailed gender-specific data wasn’t published during the 50s, but an early 1960s government sponsored survey revealed that women aged 20 - 29 were, on average, a little over thirty-four pounds lighter than women in the same age bracket today! Women aged 30 - 39 were about thirty pounds lighter! It's true that women are taller today than the 50s, but not enough to explain the gain. In 1960 the average American woman was 63.1." Today she is 63.8."

What did women know or practice back then that kept them immune from an obesity epidemic? Could it be a matter of simply not consuming high fructose corn syrup or fast food? Not so fast. The root of the problem is far more expansive!

In this ebook you will be given access to many of the 50s slimming secrets women knew. It reveals pre-BMI medical metrics for healthy weight and eating which were far more stringent and based upon medical studies instead of comparing people to a norm. Also included are vintage US government food recommendations and an examination of the psychological climate and marketing practices to women in the 50s. You’ll find suggestions for integrating “outdated” healthy practices and attitudes into your diet to combat and replace the toxic practices and processed foods prevalent today often mistaken for “progress.” This heavily researched ebook contains over seventy linked citations and scans of vintage source materials.

"Diet" literally means "the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats," and by applying the 1950s diet to her own life author Averyl Hill lost sixteen pounds and four inches around her waist and has kept it off years later. She didn’t join a gym or spend money on branded, pre-packaged diet foods or pills, nor did she start wearing a string of pearls and heels while dusting her home. Going backwards can mean forward thinking!

Please note that this book does not contain recipes, nor is it a specific, prescribed diet plan. It gives you tools to help facilitate healthy choices about how you eat, move and think about food, weight-loss and overall fitness. Unlike fad weight loss diets today that haven't made us any slimmer, the 1950s diet worked for millions of American women-- a decade of hard evidence is hard to dispute-- and we can learn to adopt it again today!

About the Author
Averyl Hill’s training and internships at The University of Vermont, where she earned a Master of Science in Counselor Education, included treating addictions and eating disorders. She is outdated by design, lives in a mid-century time capsule house and has spent over a decade immersed in vintage books, articles and other media related to food, lifestyles, health, beauty, well being and diets. Her approach is cognitive-behavioral with the belief that healthy eating and living is a bio-psycho-social issue and that sometimes “outdated” principles and practices are wiser than those of today.

Clear, to the point. THAT'S what is needed!
By A Customer
This book is an easy and clear read. Averyl does her homework. Her message might be lost in a sea of books of (eat this, not that) But she make clear lines about how we are responsibility on how much we put into our mouths. While this is an easy read to get through, I am going to re read it to highlight certain areas she states.

We all seems to be going backward in this day and age but I don't think that is a bad thing. In fact, we need to.

Counting calories DOES work. (have we gotten lazy?) I know I listening to the hype, but when I did this (counting calories) I was more careful about WHAT I ate and HOW much instead of looking at the fat content. "Fat will keep you full", as one french woman states. I look at empty calories as the real *killer*

I would heavily recommend this book along with French Women don't get Fat. I actually lost weight reading that book
Who really needs more than 4oz of dessert anyway?

Avery woke me back up to be responsible... for myself!! God bless this women. :o)

Averyl Hill's website... gems of wisdom!!!
snark freecookery. blogspot .com (when typing run all of this website together)

Thanks for reading!!!

It's NOT "just another diet".
By R-L
I purchased this e-book about 4 months ago. I came across the title and wondered what the difference was between how people ate in the 50s and how we eat now, and the difference that has created in the average weight of society from then to now. Is it really just a matter of eating too much? I found that hard to believe since I’ve spent most of my life NOT eating too much, dieting in an effort to keep my weight down, only to find myself regaining the weight, and several times dipping into the obese range. I’ve always eaten healthy for the most part, with some junk food thrown in here and there, but nothing that would explain why it was so difficult for me to lose weight permanently. So, needless to say, the idea of eating too much did not apply to me. Initially, the book seemed to be the same advice of eating less and moving more, which is frustrating, to say the least, for those of us who have done that, over and over, without lasting results. But, the more I read, the more I realized that was not the case, and it wasn't the take away message for me. Yes, that may be the answer for some people, but what about the rest of us? The more I read the book and blog, I began to see where I missed the mark in my efforts to lose weight and keep it off. At this point, let me share with you a conversation I had with my sister at that time, which had a huge impact on me, and helped to shed some much needed light on my dieting struggles vs. what is talked about in this book.

After purchasing this book, I was talking to my sister about it to see what her thoughts were about the differences then vs. today. My sister, who is older than me by a good bit, said she remembers our Grandma always "watching" her weight. She asked her once how it was that she didn't gain weight - she was petite her whole life; never had a problem with her weight. It turns out, she ate just as the book suggests. She didn't follow any crazy fad diets or restrict her calories to a crazy low level. She ate sensibly and healthy, and monitored how much she ate according to her weight. If her weight went up a bit, she would cut back her eating just SLIGHTLY, especially desserts, to get it back down. It was easy for her to overindulge in sweets/desserts without realizing it because she loved them. So, she had them, but would cut back on them if her weight started to go up. I guess that's how she knew if she was eating too many of them, by monitoring her weight. My Grandma had it right. It's a win/win doing it that way. Of course, the majority of the sweets/desserts she ate were homemade, as well as her meals. I think that's a good way to incorporate foods into your diet that you really love and don't want to do without.

After this conversation with my sister, and skimming through the book and blog again to solidify my revelation, I realized that the MAIN difference between what this book is saying and the dieting of today, is the approach. A lot of people seem to get confused by the author’s use of the word diet. She is using it as it was understood at the time, meaning, what a person ate. Today, diet refers to weight loss efforts. That would be called “reducing”. Knowing this is not a "diet" book, you'll understand why you don't/won't find recipes, meal plans, etc. Anyhow, like many others, I have followed the modern day concept of dieting…Atkins, WW, BFC, Paleo, Small Plate, 1200 Calorie Diet, Zig Zag, Low Fat, everything. You get the point. I thought, all along, that any of these diets could be “healthy”, I just needed to find which one worked for me, because, you know, everyone is different…Well, that may be true, but nothing worked for me – low carb, high carb, low fat, high fat, high protein, moderate protein. What else is there to try when you’ve tried it all, and still need to lose weight? Eating how my Grandma ate, the things that this book teaches, which brings me back to the difference of approach. Where dieting, or “lifestyle change” has you following rules, oftentimes too strict to stick with for a lifetime, and/or cutting calories lower than is comfortable or safe, eating this way is about eating common, everyday food, preferably homemade (I’m sure for those who are too busy to make home cooked meals, “watching” your weight can still help you stay on track – home cooked is just preferable for obvious reasons), and making SLIGHT adjustments in the amount you’re eating to keep the scale down. No need to do anything out of your normal routine, just make tiny adjustments along the way to keep your weight down. That is what real, sensible eating is; still eating foods you recognize and enjoy, no need for deprivation, no overcompensating restriction, or panic fasting days when you see the scale go up a few pounds. This is about calm, rational, realistic eating.

My Grandma was not a calorie counter, she simply adjusted her eating slightly, as needed. After a lifetime of following various dieting methods, and counting calories, that’s the one thing I won’t do according to the book. I hate counting calories at this point, so I won’t. But, what I have decided to do to monitor my weight loss, is to follow what my Grandma did. Although she never got to a place where she needed to lose a lot of weight, her method of “watching” her weight works for losing weight as well. Instead of counting calories, I eat according to my hunger, and “watch” my weight to make sure that I’m not eating too much to lose. If I gain, I know to cut back just a tiny bit on my food. I’ve lost several pounds already, and although it’s not a lot, that’s my goal. I’m aiming to lose no more than .5-1 pound a week. The goal is not to lose weight quickly, which is another dieting idea I have had to let go of because it is not sensible, or long lasting, it just slows down your metabolism as a result of not eating enough calories, as many doctors/nutritionists are beginning to realize. I would not be surprised if that’s a big reason for the dismal 95% failure rate of modern dieting. Patience with your weight loss is necessary with this approach, if you want long term results. Anyhow, losing weight slowly like this will take a lot more time, but my ultimate goal is to lose the weight and keep it off this time so that I don’t have to go through weight loss/regain torture anymore. Speaking of regain, if your metabolism is slow from current dieting, you may regain some of the weight you have lost before you start losing, as you likely have experienced in the past from previous dieting attempts. I just thought I'd point that out in case that happens to anybody. That's just the normal yo-yo pattern of dieting. Once you stop regaining, if that happens, the ongoing application of this method should see you start to lose weight again, hopefully for the last time. I was already at a point where I had regained the weight I previously lost when I found this book, so I'm not dealing with regaining/gaining at this point. Once I lose this weight, I will maintain my weight loss following this same method, and continue to “watch” my weight, as my Grandma did, to keep it off. The modern concept of dieting does not provide lasting results, and that’s an important difference. I’ll be sure to come back and give updates.

Do More Housework, Eat Less and Lose Weight
By willow99
I was inspired by this book to do two things: follow a stricter eating program AND do more housework. Hey, how can that be bad? Honestly this is a very interesting and well-researched look back to the 1950s when fat was fat and nobody wanted to be fat. Although there is no sample diet or eating plan, it's clear that 1950s women walked more, did more active work, and at a whole lot less than today's women. We could all learn from our mothers and grandmothers. Recommended!

From the Author
Steve Sparks has a somewhat different background to that of his co-author Wes Smoot - see 'About the Author' below. In fact, to use an English expression, their backgrounds are "as different as chalk and cheese." Steve is English and grew up in that country's second largest city, Birmingham. After graduating from university he moved to the United States and traveled around taking whatever jobs he could find--these included running the bumper cars at the amusement park on the New Jersey shore to building swimming pools, making sandwiches, and working on oil rigs in Texas. He married Patty Liddy from Detroit and settled down in San Francisco in 1985, where they opened, owned, and operated one of San Francisco's busiest pubs--The Mad Dog in the Fog--for fifteen years.

In 2002, deciding that it was time to "head to the hills" and escape city life and the rigors of the San Francisco bar scene, Patty and Steve moved to Anderson Valley, where, back in 1992, they had bought a small home on ten acres. Steve then threw himself into many volunteer activities that included membership of the A.V. Senior Center Board and the A.V. Historical Board, as well as organizing the A.V. Film Festival, the A.V. Animal Rescue Fundraiser, the Valley's annual Veterans Day event, and becoming head coach of the A.V. High School soccer team, along with his weekly contribution to the Anderson Valley Advertiser newspaper.

Steve's interest in history came as a result of many hours spent listening to the recollections of his maternal grandfather who was a wounded veteran of World War I. This led to him studying that war in detail at university and, several years later, becoming a member of San Francisco's World War I Society. Once in Anderson Valley, he became co-founder and de facto president of the military history book club and it was perhaps inevitable that he would become interested in local history. The germination of this book began after a meeting with local history expert Wes over lunch at the Anderson Valley Senior Center in 2011.

Steve's previous book, co-written with County Sheriff Tom Allman and published in 2013, was entitled Out There in the Woods and told the true story of the extraordinary 36- day manhunt for double-murderer Aaron Bassler that took place in the Mendocino coastal forests during the fall of 2011.

From the Inside Flap
This project began about three years ago when long-time Valley resident Wes Smoot and I were talking over lunch at the Anderson Valley Senior Center about our mutual desire to do something that might ensure that aspects of local history would be recorded and kept alive for the future generations. If at the same time we could make a little money for the Anderson Valley Historical Society and Museum by carrying out a historical project that interested us both, then that would be ideal. As a result, all profits from book sales will indeed go to that wonderful organization. I had come to know Wes a year or so earlier, during the research for my biography of him for the "Lives and Times of Anderson Valley Folks" series I was writing at that time for the local newspaper, the Anderson Valley Advertiser. Ours is an unusual pairing on the surface--a gentleman in his early eighties, born and raised in the country, one of the few remaining speakers of the area's unique dialect, Boontling, and someone who has spent almost his entire life in the Valley; and an Englishman, 25 years younger, who did not discover Anderson Valley until 1991, having grown up in a big industrial city 6000 miles away where they speak real English! Anyway, we are linked by our respect for history and it seems to have worked. So much so that I can say without reservation that working with Wes on this project has been a very rewarding experience indeed--he is a true gentleman, one with a fine sense of humor, and someone who accepts the need for change almost as much as he reveres the past. During that discussion at the Senior Center we came up with the idea of working on a study of the many old buildings in the Valley, in the form of both brief histories and also photographs of them from the past and today, or of what is now there where they once stood.Wes' knowledge of the area is amongst the best of the Valley's old-time, and this expertise has been the basis of the writing and recording of the history presented in the book, along with those recollections of a few other Valley folks whose input has been vital to this endeavor. Our particular appreciation goes to these three Valley history 'experts' -- Donald Pardini, Eileen Pronsolino, and Pat Hulbert, each of whom we have spoken to at length about these buildings and homes. Very early on it was decided to only include homes and buildings that were at least 70 years old, from before the early 1940s, and, just as importantly, to be included we had to have photographs of them taken from that time.We worked from there all the way back virtually to the initial discovery of the Valley by white folks in the early 1850s--the earliest photograph we came across is from 1856.The decision of which buildings and homes to include was always going to be decided by these main criteria, as Wes and I drove up and down the Valley many, many times, taking current photographs of those buildings or what is there now. We would then sit down at the dining table at Wes' home in Boonville to discuss the histories of each of them and write the texts. As I mentioned earlier, this took about three years, during which time we met perhaps twice a month, sometimes more often. In fact, if I don't get my dose of Wes' country calmness and effortless humor every week or so, my wife Patty thinks I start to return to the ways of an impatient 'bright- lighter'! (That's a 'city-dweller' in Boontling) We ended up with about 120 possible buildings--far too many for the kind of publication we had in mind; one that would be enjoyed by both those with a casual interest in history as well as the more keen followers, and perhaps a few Valley visitors too. Over time we found that getting old photographs of a number of these--remember the pictures had to be taken before the mid-1940s--was not an easy task, or certainly not one we could attempt given our wish to finish this book before I became a senior myself! As a result we reduced the total to about 80, of which we eventually decided on 'the best' 60 homes and buildings, based mostly at that point on the quality of the old photographs. All of them that made the book have Then and Now photographs, and are accompanied by a brief history, provided by either homeowners or our panel of experts. It should be noted that as often as possible the current photographs were taken from the same spot as the old ones, but this was not always possible, primarily due to too many trees being in the way to get a corresponding picture. In those cases, getting as near as possible, yet still making a relevant comparison, was the option we took. Finally, I should point out that the histories are intentionally brief. There is no doubt a more detailed account to be written on each of the selected locations but that is perhaps for others to do and was not an intention of this project. The book is not an historical tome; it is aimed at the general public and will hopefully provide an easy, flowing read, while at the same time be informative and even entertaining to everyone who buys a copy. In today's 'I need to be entertained' society, the study of history needs to provide that, certainly if it is to continue as a significant source of interest for future generations. Wes and I sincerely hope you enjoy the 'journey'... Keep turning the pages of history, Steve Sparks May 2014

About the Author
Donald W. (Wes) Smoot is a native of Anderson Valley, in fact the fourth generation of his family to live here. Most of his ancestors were either ranchers or worked in the timber and logging industry. Wes' occupation with the California Department of Transportation took him out of the Valley for 12 years at one point, during which time he became interested in the history of the communities in which he lived and worked.

When he returned to finish his career with the highway department in the Valley, local history became a big interest and hobby--after all it was the place he knew best. He is also one of the few remaining fluent speakers of the Anderson Valley dialect, Boontling.

Wes has been actively involved in various Valley historical projects and the Valley Museum for over twenty years and says,"This book has given me the opportunity to share my knowledge of the Valley with others and also to do further research into the Valley's rich history--I thought I knew a lot but I have learned so much more! It is my sincere hope that those who read this book will get as much enjoyment in doing so as I did in helping to assemble it."

Mixed Bag
By Heather LaRee
My (adult) son is a comic artist and avid reader (among other talents). I asked for his more-experienced thoughts about this book:

Bryan Tillman obviously has plenty of artistic skill and a vast knowledge of creating characters. And, he never lets you forget this. For as much insight as this book possesses, I found it extremely difficult to get passed the tone of Mr.Tillman's words. Arrogant to a laughable degree, "Kaiser" (Tillman's pen name) takes far too many pages to say the same thing. This left me, the reader, feeling like my intelligence & comprehension skills were greatly underestimated. I'm not 8 years old, and this book isn't for 8 year olds.

All this said, Creative Character Design does offer great information about character archetypes and interaction. Pleasantly, the book went beyond simply diving into the visual process and offered a lot of insight into allowing who the character IS dictate how he/she looks. Although, this said, I do wish Mr.Tillman had used some of his "better" art for the contained examples. The majority of the actual character designs in the book are very flat and uninspiring.

Creative Character Design serves well in gaining a fresh perspective on character development, but I will be looking elsewhere to grow and evolve my design skills.

Cutting Edge Designs! CREATIVE CHARACTER DESIGN: A Critical Review
By Andre Lawrence
[[VIDEOID:mo19ELVSEC9LLD8]]"The one thing that you as the character designer must remember is that the characters are always in service to the story--is not, nor will ever be, the other way around."
Bryan Tillman

This is one of those unique books on illustration that you often wonder why hasn't a "style" like this been published before or on a grand scale that a publisher like Focal Press would produce.

CREATIVE CHARACTER DESIGN is a illustrative how-to book with a distinctively hip-hop, urban rendering. If these books How To Draw Caricatures and Cartooning the Head and Figure (Perigee) are considered the foundations for learning how to illustrate people/ "characterizations" for a mass "pop" population, then this book CCD is such a book for this second decade of the new millennium.

In a sense, Tillman is saying about illustration and the storyline, form-follows-function.

What's special here is that Tillman, the author and creative director for a design firm, has some very simple-to-follow illustration basics as well as a psychological outline to get the most out of one's talent.

According to Tillman, before one can approach an illustration, he/she should possess the following five (5) traits in order to correctly capture the image. They are as follows:

Starting Points:
* Archetype
* Story
* Being Original
* Shapes
* References

Of the five, only one "Shapes," struck me as not be self-evident.

As I read and re-read, I found the psychological breakdown of personalities based on the shape of the head intriguing. What do we typically think when we see a person with a circular-shaped head? Do we really have a distinctly different set of feelings for one with a square-shaped head? What about a triangular-shaped head, what do we presupposed about their personalities?

"Shapes and Silhouettes," Chapter 5, is a must read.

It is my guess that even experienced artists, even those of us who've been illustrating for more than three decades can learn something from this book.

I also want to point out, which is not explicitly stated here, but needs to be pointed out about "illustrating," and it is a comment made by a former art professor (in an unusually boring and unproductive class.) He said, that when it comes to illustrating a person--how you feel about a person will have a dramatic effect on the way that subject is rendered. And, there's nothing that can be done to dramatically change the output unless there's a change in impression by the artist. So, for instance, if the model is profoundly beautiful, let's say a "Cheryl Ladd." If the artist has some ill-feeling toward her, the rendering will undoubtedly show the character flaws that the artist feels the subject has. The opposite is also true. If the subject is, politely-speaking, not at her/his optimal and the artist has an exaggeratedly positive feeling, then the resulting image will no doubt reflect a generous display of admiration. (And, I'm guilty of this myself.)

When you go through this fine book, bearing in mind, the subjects that Tillman mentioned fascinated him as a young man, you'll clearly see that images of warriors and women (not a bad combo ;) ) are by far his most creative and best executed designs.

CREATIVE CHARACTER DESIGN--an excellent resource for learning illustration.

A solid manual about character/story design
By Joan C. Scott
Though this is a manual on character design for visual media, it presents a methodology that is sound for anyone developing any story.

Backstory, which Tillman repeatedly stresses is of the greatest importance to story development. When developing a story for visual media, nobody fails to visualize things. But people attempting to write a short story or novel frequently omit this very important step. I teach writing, and from time to time I edit a book. Many times I have said to story writers, "How does that LOOK? Draw a sketch and then use your words to make your readers SEE what you have drawn." For a writer, the drawing skill does not have to be as well developed, but the visualization is equally important as in visual media.

Tillman's point about "would it work?" is also very important. His example of a human with four arms is excellent -- a reader or a viewer of visual presentation is going to be frustrated by presentation of a half-baked character whose anatomy simply could not function in any reality readers or viewers know. "Great art" alone may make uncritical consumers of the product happy, but art created for that level of consumer is very forgettable -- and if we are going to bother to make a story, we should strive to create quality that will be enduringly memorable.

Tillman's section about presenting a character in a series of 3-point or 5-point stances is also good. This helps a visual artist OR a writer to see the character "in the flesh" and avoid a "cardboard character" feel to the character being developed.

Tillman's teaching methodology is good: he gives a homework assignment at the end of each chapter which draws directly on what he has just presented -- and he chuckles with his reader to the effect that he realizes there is no way he can enforce the homework -- but your learning will be better if you do it. He also has a conversational, breezy tone that is easy to read but does not compromise his instruction.

One does not have to utilize Tillman's particular style of drawing to benefit from his book -- I for one am not fond of that particular style -- because his instructions will fit any style of visualization -- and for any story visualization is truly everything.
