Let me say that I only read some of the book… what I think about this book so far.

I want to say that this book taught me a lot about the male penis and just how much it means to men. This is especially true when it pertains to Black men. I had no idea some of those things happened...

The history of it all put things in totally different perspective for me and now I see why Black men are seen as being considered so over sexualized and threatening when it all stems from psychological fascination with his big black billy club.

This makes more sense to me than it ever did. I like this book for that alone… eye opening. The other information about if it works.. sorry can't help you guys.

I guess I will just have to ask my friend once he's hung like a Mandingo Warrior!

Johnson points out a crucial third element: we imagine how our decisions will play out, how we or the world would change with each action we might take. Plumbing this imaginative dimension of moral reasoning, he provides a psychologically sophisticated view of moral problem solving, one perfectly suited for the embodied, culturally embedded, and ever-developing human creatures that we are.

Johnson has done a really nice job with his latest book. He brings together a lot of the most interesting cognitive science research in the decade, and presents a really grounded view of human morality that makes a lot of sense. If you are interested in ethics, and particularly, are interested in views that hold up with a 21st century understanding of our minds, I would highly recommend it.

I read books everyday all day and cant tell you how happy i was to read a GOOD book by a Cleveland author! "The Street God" is a a VERY accurate betrayl of an inner-city Cleveland kid trying to figure out the streets. There are several funny moments while Chris takes us through adventures of teenage "relationships" and plenty of failed "get money" attempts. Lol! The book was GREAT! Without it being a spoliler alert I'm MORE excited about the sequel! Hurry up Lil Chris!

LOVED IT!!

I truly loved it. Like most new adult romances, both characters have painful backgrounds. Jessica had an abusive childhood and refuses to trust men. Because of his wealth and status, Luke finds it impossible to trust anyone without an non-disclosure agreement. Luke seeks Jessica from a dating website in order to fool his abusive father into thinking he's settled down.

Jessica's blunt personality had me laughing out loud but there were moments (when she's reliving painful flashbacks) that made me want to cry. She has been through a lot in her life, and even though Luke was born into privilege, so has he. The story moves REALLY quickly and I couldn't put it down. I LOVED IT!

I really enjoyed this book for the most part. It is very well written and even has a plausible storyline.
An out of work girl named Jessica has reached her limits. Her English degree is getting her no where and she desperately needs to make money to pay her bills. After one bad turn follows another, she finds herself signing up for an escort service that matches girls with wealthy men to act as their dates. She is weary but desperate so she signs up and quickly gets a few responses. She does not feel comfortable with the first few, they gave her a creepy vibe. She eventually responds to one that does not freak her out. They meet, and she decides to go for it.
Her new man has a lot of issues from his childhood and does not trust anyone. She feels a kindred spirit with him because she has her own demons lurking in her closet as well. For a time, everything is alright. Then she meets his dad. He is holding Luke's inheritance over his head. They have never really talked things out, so both father and son have the wrong idea about each other.
The whole thing blows up in Jessica's face when her past comes back to haunt her. Luke goes running for the money, and Jessica is left to pick up the pieces. Or does she?
The reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5, is because I was a little let down with the ending. There was room for more of an awakening for Luke, and the rest of the story was so well written that I was disappointed in the quickness to the ending. It would have been better if the reader was left feeling that Luke really learned anything. It did not feel that was the case. But all in all it is a very entertaining quick read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes when the kids who had it hard come out ahead.

A new author for me and I'm simply delighted to have discovered the story of Jessica and Luke so well told by Miss Waltz.

Our heroine comes from a tough place and every choice she makes in her life is a reflection of her difficult past. Still, her hard heart melts and freezes and melts yet again for a man who is forced to make his own hard choices.

Does he choose a safe and secure future, or will he risk it all for a love he cannot deny? Ha! Well, I'm not saying anymore except that the book finishes well without any dangling bits...and I'm left with a happy glow, hoping that this author won't take too long until her next book. If it's anything like this one, then it'll be on my insta-buy list.

Highly, highly, full heartedly recommended!

About the Author
Brenda Paik Sunoo is a third-generation Korean American writer and photojournalist. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology at University of California, Los Angeles, and her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree at Antioch University. Her memoir on loss and healing, "Seaweed and Shamans: Inheriting the Gifts of Grief," has been published in English, Korean, and Vietnamese. She and her husband, Jan, have been living in Hanoi, Vietnam, since 2002. They have one son, David, and a granddaughter, Jolena.

Touching and inspiring women!

The haenyeo of Cheju are really something to witness. When I was on the island I would be fascinated to see their floating devices scattered on the water, knowing that these grandmothers were working under the surface.

I never had the chance to know any of them because of the language and culture difference, but even so I was inspired by them. Now with this book I feel I've had the chance to meet a number of these amazing ladies and to hear their stories. The photos are gorgeous, and the stories really moving.

The author won an international history of women prize for these photos. Totally deserved!

Her stunning photography integrates artwork and story seamlessly and her text is supportive, providing a comprehensive account of these remarkable women's cultural matrix.

The author's timely theme, that of living a purposeful life, is consistently maintained by both photo and text throughout the book.

Her work is a gift to Jeju Island in portraying it so attractively. It is a gift to the world in its theme, and in introducing this relatively unknown island -- and especially, its unique diving women.

A beautiful, compelling book; I loved it.

Very interesting!

Once I started to read this book I found it difficult to put down. Granted I am addicted to playing checkers against my computer when taking breaks at work, but still.... This is very interesting material for checkers players and computer programmers alike.
However, I do have a couple of problems with the book. First, it is very poorly edited. There are a number of grammatical mistakes, [one right on the first paragraph], the author at times goes into unnecessary tangents and, in general the book is too long and repetitive. In addition, it bothered me that, perhaps because of the author's familiarity with chess, he decided to use chess notation to describe the games. This makes it more difficult for checkers players to follow the games while reading the book. The author/editor should have made the effort to use checkers notation or to provide better diagrams.

Exciting and balanced portait of flawed people and machines

I'm a biased reviewer since I was involved in the Chinook project and I'm mentioned a number of times in the book.
Others have already pointed out how this book reads like a thriller. I agree completely. Each time that I re-read this book (which is almost like a yearbook for me), I get a rush out of how effectively Jonathan takes the reader into his own mind, the (computer) mind of Chinook, and the minds of Chinook's opponents (often through their own comments and game annotations). I squirm at the retelling of how Chinook lost the first two matches in Hot Springs (1992) where I sat Poker-faced as I operated the computer.
Another strength of this book is how Jonathan fearlessly pulls no punches in presenting balanced portraits of the many people involved in the Chinook story. Don't expect a forgettable puff piece. Scientists and champions are not immune from human foibles. In dispelling that illusion, Jonathan tells a honest and valuable story. Nobody escapes Jonathan's (sometimes) sharp criticism: not myself (deserved), not some of the luminaries of checkers (accurate, in my opinion), and especially not Jonathan himself. But Jonathan balances this with genuine praise, affection, and respect in almost every case. Consequently, the book contains many insights on human nature, the nature of AI, and what happens when they cross paths.

The fascinating story of one Man and his Machine

This book tells the story of an ambitious computer scientist who sets out to write a program that can beat the World Checkers Champion. He succeeds, although it takes him six years to achieve his goal. On the technical side, the book describes how the checkers program works, and how much effort it took Schaeffer and his team to make it play well enough to beat the human Champion. On the human side, it tells the story of the amazing Dr. Tinsley, probably the best checkers player who ever lived, who had beaten all his opponents, who had become bored with the game, and who finds in the computer a fresh opponent that has no fear for him, that plays for the win, that is actually fun to play against.
The most intense passages of the book are the ones where Schaeffer, as the operator of his program, has to watch his creation make moves he doesn't trust, but cannot do anything about. The most intriguing aspect of the book is that the way in which Chinook calculates it! s best moves doesn't come close to how man does it. (Or how we think we do it.)
Chinook's is a fascinating story. The book is very well written, and reads like a thriller.

It's Time For The Truth

I must start of by saying this book is absolutely incredible. From the second you begin to read it, you feel the love and positive energy from the true author...Mikos, a great being from the hollow earth. It truly is time for those on earth to become aware of what the universe really has in store. There are more life forms than us here on earth (they are actually in the earth, which is what the book is about).

I recommend that everyone reads this book and please open your mind. A closed mind only shows stupidity and fear of advancing into a great civilization. We must raise our consciousness and become aware of the truth and what a better way to start than with this book. I can say I was truly sad for the 1st time in my life when I finished this book.

I was hoping for a different angle.

Believe it or not, there is a tremendous amount of scientific, geological, astronomical, archaelogical, and historical evidence to support the theory that our Earth (and indeed perhaps all planets) are hollow. Shocking, exciting, and inspiring all at the same time, to be sure, and not the least bit "crazy". Yes, obviously NASA and the World's governments / militaries have known this for quite some time now (if true...) and obviously they have decided to keep it from us for a variety of reasons. I wasn't expecting a big discussion about the global conspiracy involved in this cover-up, but I was hoping for more physical / historical discussions on the inner Earth and possible connections to UFOs / the "alien saga" / cryptozoology / Nazis / Tibet / the Admiral Byrd Expedition / military bases and others. However, the majority of this book is about a few entities telling the author how wonderful their environment is and that some of us may be invited in there in the near future and that our surface World is terrible but we shouldn't worry too much. Rather, we should focus on positive feelings and attempt to contact the entities with our minds. Just a bit "loose" for me and not nearly as practical in its presentation as I was hoping for.

An incredible book

This is a book that has notions that will expand your awareness. I contacted Ms Robbins and shared anecdotal information that validated her book. Read it and learn. I also recommend A Dweller on Two Planets as an additional read.
