This analysis is based on interviews with over fifty Chinese immigrants who were students during the Cultural Revolution. Zang includes an analysis of the differing strategies used by individuals from different groups to cope with the events of this stressful decade. Zang closes with the suggestion that class analysis can be productively applied to the study of contemporary Chinese politics.

About the Author

Sandra P. Rosenblum has lectured widely on performance practices at universities, schools of music, and both national and international conferences. The author of numerous journal articles and of editions of sonatas by Scarlatti and Clementi, Ms. Rosenblum holds degrees from Wellesley College and Harvard University. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Radcliffe Institute. Her present research is on the music of Chopin.

Exactly what I've been searching for long long long time!

As a piano instructor, I thought that C.P.E.Bach's The True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments should be the comprehensive companion on performance practice, but found it is a little bit old in some ways. Then one of my friends who is on piano faculty at the Michigan University in An Arbor recommended this book to me. I believe this book is the exact guide to me when talking about performance practice on mordern piano especially in stylistic interpretation on general issues, such as how to deal with small slurs in different classical composers, different expression marks, etc. Great in many ways.

Zone Recipes for Dummies

Understanding "The Zone" is one thing. Developing menues, based on "The Zone", is another thing. Thank you, Dr. Sears, for providing so many alternatives for those of us who have neither the imagination nor the time to develop such recipes on our own.
The amount of research necessary to create such a variety of recipes is more than I could possibly do on my own, and greatly enhances the pleasure of being in the zone.
The book,"The Zone", provides a thorough explanation of the concept. This book, which, along with the recipes, contains brief explanations of the "zone" concept along with tables and charts, is an excellent complement to "The Zone", and I recommend it highly.

Best of the Zone Books

After studying most of the Zone books, the original Entering the Zone, Mastering the Zone, the Anti-Aging Zone, A Week in the Zone, and pretty much all the others, I recommend The Top 100 Zone Foods to beginners, because the earlier books, especially --while essential to understanding the science-- are the worst written and worst organized. Having adopted the Zone diet permanently, I refer to this Zone book more than any other. None of the Zone books are well written. But the diet is so excellent, we must read them. At least this one has a decent primer on pages 8-18, which I refer to for reminders on basic questions --like how many grams of fat are there in a "block"? Plus, the organization here --listing the best Zone foods --in order-- and providing a one, two, or three smiley face ranking system-- greatly increases the book's usefulness. Finally, while this is a paperback, it's a big, sturdy paperback.

About the Author

Loren Landow has been an athletic performance specialist for more than 20 years. He has trained over 500 professionals from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), National Football League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, and National Hockey League, as well as Olympic gold medalists and a world-record holder.

Landow was the strength and conditioning coach on season 16 of The Ultimate Fighter reality television show. He is widely recognized as an authority on speed and power development and presents nationally and internationally for renowned organizations in the sport performance and fitness industries. He is often hired as a consultant for many club and professional teams. Currently he is the owner/director of performance at Landow Performance in Denver, Colorado.

Loren has an amazing way of making things simple. Especially with mixed martial arts, every aspect of training needs to be developed. Aerobic, anaerobic, keeping athletes healthy, strong, powerful and making sure they can endure the training. Loren's book is essential reading for anyone looking to improve their workouts for combat sports.

Valuable introduction to conditioning and endurance training

From an athletic standpoint, I have found several of the books published by Human Kinetics to be useful resources in supplementing my study of traditional Okinawan karate. Ultimate Conditioning for Martial Arts by Loren Landow, one of the publisher's most recent titles, can technically apply to any martial artist, but the book does tend to be geared more towards athletes and competitors. Landow also assumes that readers already have basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and sports training methods. While perhaps not suitable for absolute beginners, Ultimate Conditioning for Martial Arts does provide a good starting point for established martial artists who want to begin incorporating speed, agility, and conditioning work into their training. In addition to providing suggested conditioning exercises and programs, Landow also incorporates an overview of relevant and closely-related topics such as the evaluation and establishment of fitness baselines, warmups and flexibility, rest and recovery, and nutrition. The book includes a generous number of helpful photographs to accompany the descriptions of the specific exercises, but the photographs selected aren't always the ones that would be most illustrative or useful. Additionally, rather than explaining the particular functions and applications of the individual exercises, Landow tends to broadly generalize and categorize their benefits. This lack of specificity and guidance can make the creation of an individualized conditioning program challenging for someone who has never developed one before. Ultimate Conditioning for Martial Arts groups commonly practiced martial arts disciplines together as either striking and kicking arts or wrestling and grappling arts. Landow suggests specific conditioning exercises for each category but also emphasizes the benefits of using a blended approach when developing a training program. Mixed Martial Arts is the only discipline that's addressed in-depth but Ultimate Conditioning for Martial Arts is still broadly applicable to other martial arts and a valuable resource, providing a fine overall introduction to conditioning and endurance training.

Liam Kincaid, one of the double agents for Earth's Resistance within the occupation forces of the alien Taelons, has more reason than most to feel conflicted: a Kimura, the now-extinct progenitor species of the Taelons and their ancestral enemies the Jaridians, was one of his three parents. Survivors of a secret experiment to infect humans with Jaridian DNA learn to channel energy through their palms which could make them deadly, if risky, recruits for the Resistance. Liam's unique genome responds to the infection by giving him racial memories about the true relationships among Kimura, Taelons and Jaridians. These flashbacks are the novel's strength, adding depth to the series and to Liam's characterization. But the situation of the double agents is not precarious enough to generate suspense their habit of phoning the Resistance from the Taelon mothership make them seem as snug in the enemy's midst as Hogan's Heroes. And the fateful decision to let the virus loose on Earth, instead of experimenting on prisoners, is implausible except as a way to drive the plot. Readers with a previous interest in the series will be rewarded, but only Durgin's deft use of familiar contemporary elements, such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and a computerized cameo by a certain warrior princess, will keep the uninitiated from feeling adrift. (Jan. 16)Forecast: Flagging ratings and fan disgruntlement with the TV series on the SciFi channel may limit sales for this tie-in, especially as Roddenberry fans shift focus to the new Star Trek series that debuted on UPN this fall, Enterprise.

The latest Earth: Final Conflict tie-in focuses on Liam Kincaid, the human made to be the bodyguard of the Taelon Da'an. Liam faces a particularly horrendous conflict when he uncovers a Taelon plot to infect humanity with a retrovirus. Those who don't die of flu-like symptoms will develop the shaquarava, the Taelon complex of psychic powers, and become something like a new race. Complicating that situation, a number of members of the anti-Taelon resistance, including several of Liam's closest human friends, are among those infected and stand to give humanity powers against the Taelons it heretofore lacked. With memories of how a similar retrovirus altered the Taelons' ancestors and a great deal of help from his friends, Liam may be able to reverse the course of events to the benefit of both peoples. This is one of the more intelligent, if not most accessible, entries in the series, featuring traces of humor and an acute awareness of the impact of divided loyalties in the situation it presents. Great book!! Better than the season five series plot

The book resolved quite a few open issues with regard to the origins of the Taelons and their connection to the Jaridians and the Kimera. The series was not very good at this. As a matter of fact, the series created a more questions in its fifth season that it neglected to answer. I enjoyed the book and hope to read more by this author and others writing about this sci-fi series.

Many E:FC fans dislike Liam Kincade for various reasons. This book gives alot more insight into the character of Liam then was ever given in S2. The author seems to want to make Season 2 make more sence then it did on TV and does a very good job. I enjoyed the Conversation with Ha'gel and the Flashbacks of Ha'gels memories of the Atavus! The book goes into alot of detail of how the Jaridians and Taelons were split apart and how the Kimera were involved. In Season 1 and 2 We are often given sketchy, cryptic details by Da'an and Zo'or about the Atavus and the Kimera and how the Taelons were created. The author takes those and binds them all together so they make sence. Very well done and compelling reading. I couldnt put it down. The writers on the TV show should take lessons from this author. Who knows, maybe she can make Season 5 make some sence.

Heritage is the 5th EFC book, and almost certainly the best.
While "Arrival", "The First Protector" and "Requiem for Boone" focus on event before the show, and "Augur's Teacher" focuses on an original chracter, "Heritage" is purely about Liam.
The basis is that Zo'or's latest project is to give humanity shaquarava through a virus, shortly after the season two episode "Second Chances". (Shaquarava are the glowing things on Liam's hands, for those unfamiliar with the series) Not knowing that Liam is one-third Kimera, and has shaquarava of his own, Zo'or orders that Liam is administered the virus. The virus gives Liam access to some of his genetic memories, including the knowledge that it was the shaquarva that turned the Atavus into Taelons, and started them on that nasty treacherous path of theirs.
Hayley Simmons (from episodes "Second Chances", "Thicker Than Blood" and "Take No Prisoners") is a major player, and there are bits of Liam/Hayley romance. While it is questionable that Zo'or would attempt to give humans shaquarva (which could allow humanity to join the Commonality), this is a minor flaw.
The plot is mainly plausible, executed with a minimum of techno-babble, and makes sense in context with the rest of the series. There are excellent explanations for the Taelons' hatred of the Kimera and how the Taelons and Jaridians differ. All characters are very, umm... in character.
Anywho. It's a great book.
