About the Author
Native Arizonian Jan MacKell Collins is an author and historian whose work focuses on prostitution history and other interesting aspects of the West. Author of over two thousand magazine articles, her writing appears in Colorado Gambler Magazine, Kiva Magazine and True West Magazine. Her 2009 book Red Light Women of the Rocky Mountains was nominated for a WILLA award by Women Writing the West in 2011 she was a co-nominee for the 2010 anthology, Extraordinary Women of the Rocky Mountain West.

A Fine Book on Old West Pioneer Prostitutes

Jan MacKell Collins has just come out with another well written and researched book on Old West prostitution. This is her third book on this subject. Her other two books, BROTHELS, BORDELLOS, & BAD GIRLS: PROSTITUTION IN COLORADO 1860-1930 (2004) and RED LIGHT WOMEN OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS (2009) have added a great deal of knowledge and understanding of these important painted ladies of the west. This third book continues the process.
This book is easy to read and understand. Her many citations are a good indication of her extensive research. I have done a great deal of research on the topic myself and I continue to learn more from each of her books. Her coverage of prostitution in Prescott is the best and most extensive to date.
I particularly liked her use of Sanborn maps that show where the women plied their trade in Prescott. These maps are quite revealing and this is especially the case where the author has made various interpretations. This book also contains photos that have not been seen by the public.
I feel WILD WOMEN OF PRESCOTT, ARIZONA should be in the library of everyone interested in the pioneer prostitutes who worked and helped settle the American West. Her book receives an “A” from this retired professor.

Reminescent of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, this is a great first book.
I will enjoy reading as this author refines his style -and I NEED to know where this story goes!

A Delightful Read

The Reluctant Messiah was a delightful change of pace for me to read. The concept of the story was quite original as well.
I found the characters to be unlikely candidates for the task they faced which is what made the story seem so real. The tale was well thought out and a fun read.
I hope to see more from this author in the future and I highly recommend this book to one and all.

This book draws on the spirit of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and manages to be humourous and silly at times, without it taking away from the story as a whole. A very worthwhile read!

Definitely interested in seeing what this author does in the future!

First collection of classic Don Rosa Duck stories

This is the first of what will hopefully be several collections of Don Rosa Duck comics. These have appeared in various Disney comics and some collections, but this is the first time a book collection has collected them.

These are the earliest of Rosa's "Donald Duck" stories (they seem to be skipping over the "Uncle Scrooge" stories, hopefully for future volumes). One is the "Return to Plain Awful", a sequel to a classic Barks story of a land of square eggs, "Lost in the Andes", this time including Uncle Scrooge & Flintheart Glomgold.

* "Fit to be Pied" (1988)
* "Fir-Tree Fracas"
* "Oolated Luck"

In reviewing the list of Don Rosa comics on Wikipedia, these are almost* all the "Donald Duck" stories of his first 25. Left out are the "Uncle Scrooge" stories, but also left out is "Nobody's Business" (a "Donald" story, but maybe they are viewing it as a Scrooge story.

A wonderful start!

I'm a young lady as far as things go, but I grew up with Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics from an early age. The only ones my dad would buy us were the Carl Barks reprints and Don Rosa's work. The issues in this volume are some of the ones I remember best, the ones that left so strong an imprint that I remember where I was when I read them.

With this and the Carl Barks duck library that Fantagraphics are printing, I am happy. I can feel sure that when my nieces and nephews are old enough I'll have duck stories to share with them.

There are only so many comics anymore that will actually appeal to kids (thanks so much Marvel and DC for deciding to change your demographic to 30 yr-old men while complaining that kids don't read comics anymore) and these are the best of them. I learned more from duck comics than I did from grade school. Can't wait for the second volume to come out!!

Don Rosa, the best, after Barks

There were a few artists who could mimic the style of Carl Barks very well. Unfortunately, though their art was superb their stories often lacked the Barks appeal. Don Rosa did not mimic Carl Barks artistry; but developed his own splended style. Rosas characters are a bit heavier than Barks in form, but they are magnificent in their own right and Rosa is Carl Barks equal in story telling. This book is a great example of the maturing of Don Rosas art and story telling. Just as Carl Barks works were made into a library of works; so should Don Rosas works be brought together into a library of works. I highly recommend this book and hope there will be a complete set of Don Rosas work produced. Rosa and Barks are supreme in the ranks of Disney Comic artists.

Very poor text

Just finishing up a semester-long, junior-level optics course using this book. It is absolutely horrid. The students often find the exposition incomprehensible (as do I). The authors frequently pull results out of thin air when a few lines of derivation/explanation would have made things clear. The problem sets are generally useless as they are routinely too difficult or too easy. The choice of topics is over-reaching. Care should be taken with fundamentals, then applications and variations on a theme can be introduced. This book makes the fundamentals a mystery, then piles on one topic after another before the end of the chapter. I can't think of anything good to say about this book. No real online support. Even the diagrams are frequently a head-scratching affair. It should be discontinued. What garbage. I wish my students could get their money back.

Not helpful at all, a 100-page optics book works better than it

I'm a graduate student, usually research on electromagnetics; recently changed to optics and photonics. The book of Bahaa was out in library, so I picked up this, wanted to give it a try.
One word - HORRIBLE.
Like what's been written in a previous review, the author just tried to pile up a bunch of hard-to-understand concepts in the book; every subsection of the book is relatively short; no detailed derivation, just results and then another results; I'm not a native English speaker, but never had a problem reading a well-written book, but the explanation in this book is just confusing. Even in my most familiar part - electromagnetic optics, a lot of the things in there are hard to understand for me; For the very basic stuff like "wavefront", the author didn't give a clear definition; useless figure illustrations.

After briefly going through the book, I have to read some other books to understand what it's talking about. Apparently not a good book for self-studying.

The cover looks cool, but NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.

I like the book

It looks like there are some hard feelings here, so I will take previous reviews into account. This textbook is actually quite carefully written in that the authors teach individual experiments with precisely the level of detail and theory appropriate to the advanced undergraduate. In each section there is a figure associated with the text which is not too far (usually on the same page), has geometry which does not require self-congratulatory axiomatic proof in the text, and provides a conceptual anchor in case the reader needs a visual accompaniment. The problems in the text need some work, because they should be graded from exercises to challenge to proofs. But the examples in the text are good enough to allow some degree of self-study, which is not a common thing for textbooks. This book is not too big either. An honors high schooler could put it in the backpack for summer camp and actually get somewhere. The book as a whole may not be as coherent as possible, but I for one can deal with this. It helps that the authors understand the English language and all of its nuances.

Fascinating glimpse into the mental health of notable personalities

This is a fascinating glimpse into the minds and disorders of a dozen notable personalities. Each chapter provides a concise biography of the subject, focusing on a unique personality trait that defined them. The chapters also delve into the background of the particular maladies and how they have been treated throughout history. Well written and fun to read, the book will peak interest in reading more about the individuals. I found some chapters more interesting than others but it depends on how much you have read about the particular person. I found the Marilyn Monroe chapter mundane but I had heard all of the information before. I found the chapters on people that I was not that familiar with (Christine Jorgenson, George Gershwin) to be more fascinating.

No One is Perfect....Not Even Our Heroes!

In this well researched and well written book, Claudia Kalb investigates the behavior, personality, and accomplishments of 12 famous people and identifies what was very likely to have been a manifestation of mental disorder. In this psychiatric “tell all” we learn details about the personage’s life, their personality, and the challenges faced. We also learn how, in spite of these challenges, they were able to succeed.

We learn how the perception of mental disorders have changed over time, and how the medical community has evolved in the definition of psychological disorders, their identification, and their treatment.

Some of the personalities, Betty Ford, Princess Diana, and Christine Jorgensen, lived in the 20th century and had the benefit of psychological testing and treatment and all three were outspoken about their problems during their lifetime. Betty Ford with substance addiction and abuse, Princess Diana with bulimia, and Christine Jorgensen with what was then considered gender dysphoria and is now the hotly debated, and very current subject of gender identity.

Other personalities were dysfunctional but on the basis of their wealth and position, lived peculiar, often destructive lives until their deaths. Andy Warhol’s townhouse was so filled with boxes and stuff that he was reduced to living in only one room….his bedroom. This extreme hoarding was publicly discovered when he died unexpectedly after a gall bladder operation. Howard Hughes suffered from OCD and a pathological fear of germs and disease. His extremely wealth allowed him to surround himself with employees who indulged his fears and helped maintain his bizarre behavior. Frank Lloyd was a narcissist who saw himself at the center of the universe. Always right, always perfect, his buildings leaked and were structurally unsound. He cared little for the needs of those who commissioned him….or for his family.

To me, most interesting were those who were successful because of, rather than in spite of, their mental peculiarities and disorders. Abraham Lincoln suffered from states of depression that allowed him to perceive the disastrous realities of a nation at war far more perceptively than, say, a gung-ho optimist. Albert Einstein was very likely somewhere on the Asperger’s spectrum. Socially inept, he was a genius capable of focusing on the most advanced and complicated problems of theoretical physics. George Gershwin was a restless, inattentive, “wild boy” that couldn’t sit still or take instruction….until he discovered the piano. A bundle of nervous energy his entire life, Gershwin composed “Rhapsody in Blue” in only 3 weeks. Would he have been so accomplished if he had been diagnosed with ADHD when a child and treated with Adderall?

This intriguing combination of celebrity, accomplishment, psychology, and history is absorbing and always interesting.

WHY GREAT MINDS DON'T THINK ALIKE

Yes, this is a book about a dozen disorders of history's acclaimed and notable personalities which include Lincoln, Monroe, Darwin, Warhol et al. But this is also a book about achievements and seeds of greatness in a troubled garden of fascinating personalities.

Andy Warhol Was a Hoarder examines these troubled minds in an edifying and engaging voice for readers interested in psychology profiles and disorders. Author Claudia Kalb has culled and corroborated facts from published medical reports, biographies, autobiographies, letters and even available diaries. But here is the interesting thing, the personalities she chose are not random, but rather connected in creative ways. She mentions in her introduction that "Ultimately, this book is about crossways and connections..."

If you know someone that suffers from a particular disorder, then Kalb's book may help to destigmatize the disorder. You will find optimism between the pages. As Joseph Campbell once said, "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are." Each of us is unique in our idiosyncrasies, foibles and character defects and being "normal," which is open to interpretation, is somewhat overrated (there is a great article in Psychology Today by David Bedrick, J.D., Dipl. PW on "Why Being Normal Isn't Always Healthy").

Look at the most recent example of Michael Burry depicted in the movie "The Big Short." Burry's son was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, which Burry thinks he may too suffer a mild form of the autism-related condition. But like Einstein, Michael Burry had an extraordinary focus, and Burry had the counterintelligence to buy credit default swaps before the bubble burst.

Years ago when I read "Darkness Visible" by William Styron, I learned Styron, like Hemingway, suffered from depression, yet both were incredibly gifted writers and success was not the cure. Van Gogh suffered from depression (and aura of migraines -- I also suffer from this form of migraines). John Forbes Nash Jr. in "A Beautiful Mind" suffered from schizophrenia. Why is it that so many creative types in entertainment suffer from depression and tend to medicate themselves through substance abuse, most recently Scott Weiland -- It is well known that Jim Morrison had a high IQ but his destructive tendencies and alcoholism cut his life short. Great Poets: Plath, Pound, Poe, Kerouac, Dickenson all battled depression, however notice the brilliance of their poetry.

In the final analysis, there is a gift in all this if the individual learns to creatively channel their "chaos of delight," (Darwin referring to the mind). Nietzsche also once said, "One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star."

You will find yourself seeking out more than the dozen "beautiful minds" included in this book. I think Claudia Kalb could easily turn this book into an ongoing series.

I enjoyed this biography of Major General Artemas Ward as Charles Martyn not only wrote from an unbiased view point, he included copies of the documents he cited and excerpts of documents he used to verify what he said and quoted. I am a direct decedent of Artemas Ward and I have purchased copies of this book for all of my children so that they will know the fascinating man our First Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Forces was and by his action of stepping aside brought the colonies together so that we could unit as one united country. History has done this man an injustice, but Charles Martyn has given him the honor he so deserved.

The 20% that gets you 80% of your Results

I love this book. For what it is. And for what it is not. I’m new to data science and “what it is NOT” is very important to me. It’s NOT a lot mind-numbing math. It’s NOT long intellectual detours into academic thinking that doesn’t really apply to the kind of projects I’m wanting to do. What it is… is the Pareto Principle: the 20% of what you do that gives you 80% of your results. This is at least that 20-40%. It’s the real world basics of data science / machine learning that I can learn and use in the real world.

It’s also like having a mentor in a book form. Throughout this book, Gutierrez provide hard learned, hard working insights about how you actually do data science on a day-to-day basis. Little things that have a big impact and save lots of wasted time. Little things that you could spend the next 10 years learning yourself. Or you could read this book. I highly recommend it for people new or intermediate in their data science /ML journey.

Excellent and most importantly, very updated book. This is the only data science book I read that heavily includes Gradient Boosting, which is the most popular method in Kaggle.
