George B. Johnson, Ph.D., is a professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis and a professor of genetics at the university's School of Medicine. Colorful and relevant

Holt Biology is well laid out with abundant examples from everyday life to help students relate to the subject matter. The internet links are helpful. Each chapter begins with a single page illustrated feature, 'In Perspective: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow' that gives students a glimpse and feeling of how scientific thought has developed through time. The chapters provide study hints, notes on word origins and other features to help students get the most out of their study. This is the first textbook on CD that I've used with my homeschooled child. I'm happy with it, because I can adjust the font size for my aging eyes (I like the 'fit width' view option), but my child would prefer to handle a 'real' book.

Great but INDEX IS TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this book but I am giving it one star because I am so infuriated by the lack of a useful index. There is no index that lists which cities the buildings are in -- they are only arranged by country. Why? Many of us would like to visit buildings that are near us or in cities that we travel to. This bizarre lack of information in the index makes that virtually impossible.

This is perhaps the most foolish indexing decision I have ever seen in my entire life, perhaps the most foolish indexing decision in the history of the written word.

Also: why don't they give addresses of the buildings anywhere?

Please correct this in the next edition. Maybe create a website where we can look this stuff up.

Clearly, a lot of time was spent on this book. It's unfortunate that strange indexing decisions have rendered it almost useless.

INTERESTING BOOK - BUT FLAWED

Some of the buildings do not have corresponding photos with the descriptions but that can be understandable because the book runs almost 1000 pages.
But I did find two errors:
First Error - Page 523 has Case Study House No.22 but the photo is of Case Study House No.21 both are by Pierre Koneig and they are both in the Los Angeles area.
Second error - Page 565 has Elrod House but the photo is of the Sheats/Goldstein House which is in Beverly Hills will the Elrod House is in Palm Springs. The Elrod House is famous for its location in the film Diamonds Are Forever and its circular in design.
Overall the book is a very good reference book with a photo and a short description of the building.

Mixed Reactions to what could have been an outstanding book.

1001 Buildings is a resource that you need. That said, it has some drawbacks. It has a strong English focus; perhaps London emphasis is better as a describer. Many English buildings. Almost all the written parts which are signed were by experts from London. Thought it missed some very important Western Hemisphere and Asian buildings, although it did have a lot for Cuba. Seemed to miss a number of outstanding American architects. Do not assume you will find a picture of each site as there are numerous pages with only written text. Variety of types of buildings (churches, factories, temples, and public use structures) was excellent. Indexing was poor, but the arrangement by year brought an interesting awareness of buildings in different parts of the world built at the same time.

A must read for new and older christians alike!

I don't like to say this..but not many books keep me through the end. Partly because of my busy life and partly because there just isn't enough in the content to keep me interested. I am proud to say I finished Rick Joyner's "There were Two Trees in the Garden! I found that the author had so much spiritual insight that I just had to keep coming back for more! I have recommended this book to friends and relatives because I feel so many christians have not grasped some of the great truths of the Bible and what it takes to please God! I believe everyone can benefit from the wisdom imparted through reading this book. Scripture is quoted throughout the book in bold text with insights presented in easy to understand language. I believe when a reader finishes this book he will be enlightened. I will reread this book to use as a reminder that we cannot please God with our goodness it must come through a spiritual relationship with Him.

The most enlightening book about the nature of man.

Rick Joyner has been given such abundant revelation in the matter of the nature of man. He starts with the two trees in the garden and shows that same dichotomy throughout the Word of God. At every conflict, at every critical point in the history of God's dealings with man, we see the two trees present and the same choice before us.
Every point is backed with scripture. These concepts make it so much easier to understand the nature of the ongoing internal conflict of "walking in the spirit", and "walking in the flesh". With these ideas made plain "walking in the spirit" becomes that much easier; or at least that much more obvious which walk we are taking.
Joyner's heart for God over and above God's blessings is as present as ever. "We must worship the Lord of the Book, not the Book of the Lord".
If you want insight into the daily battle for holiness and fulfillment of God's destiny, DO NOT PASS THIS BOOK UP.

Mr. Joyner has again painted a masterpiece using the Word of God. The straight-forward approach and depth of God's word is so wonderfully innertwined. I had to read it, re-read it, and allow it to soak in because each morsel was meat to my spirit. Highly recommended to every believer willing to receive from the richness of God's Word.

Karl Polanyi: The Limits of the Market is the first comprehensive introduction to Polanyi’s ideas and legacy. An excellent critical overview of a great thinker

When I first read this book I almost had a heart attack as I feared Gareth Dale had stole the thunder from my own in-progress PhD. thesis on Polanyi but, thank goodness, as my focus is European Social-Democracy, I find I still have some wind in my sails. Nonetheless, Dale's excellent book has given me a wealth of issues to ponder.
What is especially admirable in Gareth Dale's approach to Polanyi is the broad theoretical vision he brings to his subject. Under Dale's exacting lense, Polanyi's ideas are carefully dissected and examined revealing both the soaring, visionary genius of the man (I was referring here to Polanyi yet there is something of this light evident in Dale's own approach)as well as the contradictions and problematic elements that clearly emerge.
Gareth Dale's investigation of Polanyi emerges as sympathetic but critical with a clear challenge set out for those of us who would seek to develop Polanyi's ideas as theoretical tools for a "Polanyian" praxis.
For students of Polanyi, socialist theory or political economy in general, I would heartily recommend this book as an essential companion to any reading of Polanyi's "The Great Transformation". It is an excellent guide and reference for any investigation of Polanyi and his ideas or, indeed, of the broader intellectual and theoretical concerns of which Polanyi's work is a part.

Good book. Definitely worth reading. It helps me to understand God's love better and motivates me to live out God's will for me. I don't want to give my "leftovers" to God.... It is my prayer that I can be obessed by Jesus (just as the book said).... God's love for us is radical, and I hope my response to Him is redical too.

DO NOT BUY!

If you want Al-Mawrid, buy the hardcover version; do not buy Al-Quareeb Al-Mawrid, which is a shoddy knock-off.

1) The very positive reviews of this book on amazon are for a DIFFERENT BOOK! The first few reviews are labelled so, and later reviews, while not so labelled, refer to features like the "The fine hardcover binding..." and "... a dictionary for Arabic and English brovrebs [sic: proverbs] - translated back and forth" which are not included in this paperback edition. Also, both books have the same number of reviews. Without having checked all the reviews individually, I believe Amazon has cross-linked the reviews of the hardback version to the paperback version as if they were the same aside from the binding, but THEY ARE NOT.

2) The typeset is too small - if you are not fairly familiar with the basic arabic script, you will have difficulty discerning the Arabic spelling of some words.

3) The English-Arabic portion is poorly organized for translation into Arabic. For example, the entry "flush" is followed by 16 definitions, without English equivalents or indication of parts of speech. Multiple undifferentiated definitions of English words are common. The book appears to be an Arabic dictionary of English and an English dictionary of Arabic bound together. If you are a student of Arabic and need to translate English words into Arabic, this dictionary is of little use.

4) The paperback edition currently being shipped is VERY poorly bound. The first time I opened the book a dozen pages fell out of it, and more have fallen out since then. I have now owned this book about three weeks.

Good pocket dictionary with teeny-weeeny print.

First, you need to know that "English-Arabic" means English-TO-Arabic. You can look up a word in English and find its Arabic equivalent. This dictionary does not go both ways. For Arabic-TO-English you'll need another dictionary.

"Al Mawrid Al Quarib" is an ultra-abridged version of the authoritative English-Arabic dictionary used in the Arab world. The unabridged version, "Al Mawrid", is the Lebanese equivalent of Webster's Dictionary; and like Webster's, it's revised every few years. The copy I bought from Amazon is the 2004 revision of the pocket edition.

This dictionary focuses on modern Arabic--better for reading newspapers than poems. It even includes some pictures. But the PRINT IS UNBELIEVABLY SMALL--especially the Arabic. I would not recommend this as your main English-Arabic dictionary, but it's light enough to leave in your backpack and small enough to carry in your pocket. The binding is plasticized, Middle-East-Green paper. It's very, very CUTE. :-)

Robert N. Lussier is Professor of Management at Springfield College. Having taught management for more than 25 years, he has developed innovative and widely copied methods for applying concepts and developing skills that can be used personally and professionally. A prolific writer, Dr. Lussier has more than 350 publications to his credit, including other best selling textbooks (such as Management Fundaments: Concepts, Applications, Skill Development, also by South-Western/Cengage) and articles published in Academy of Entrepreneurship Journal, Business Horizons, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Management Education, Journal of Small Business Management, Family Business Review, and Journal of Small Business Strategy and many others. He served as founding director of Israel Programs and taught courses in Israel. His international experience also stretches to Namibia and South Africa. He holds a bachelor of science in business administration from Salem State College, master's degrees in education and business administration from Suffolk University, and a doctorate in management from the University of New Haven.

After I have waited 3 1/2 weeks for this item to ship JudyPL cancelled the order. I had tried to make contact numerous times and only received an automated reply that said not yet shipped. I started class last week and have been getting by thinking that the book was on the way. Now I am back to square 1, not to mention have to wait to get my money back.

The fourth world

In many ways, YSKOV is the polar opposite of AHWOSG. While Eggers' first book was angry and bustling with energy and chaos, here he takes a more leisurely pace, no less staggering, but in a more subtle and less fanfare way. The main character, Will, is diametrically different: he is melancholy and lonely, having recently lost his best friend and been physically beaten by a couple of anonymous attackers. So he decides to travel around the world handing out money to poor strangers with his friend Hand. They do it spontaneously, however, hoping that Providence will guide them to where they are supposed to be. So most of the places they decide to go to - Greenland, Siberia, Egypt, Mongolia, etc. - they never reach. Instead they end up in Senegal, Morocco, Estonia, and Latvia, and unlike most adventure stories, rather than finding adventure they find only a dead end. Their trip is a failure from start to finish - they never escape what they want to leave behind, and they never find where they want to be. They constantly abort their plans. Their philanthropy seems to help no one. Will tries to hop a horse buggy to hand the driver some cash, but falls on his face instead; they drive to the top of a mountain at night, looking for poor mountaindwellers, but find it empty and silent. This is a travel-adventure story made up of airport terminals, hotel rooms, empty beaches, vacant bars, desolate mountaintops and lonely woods. It is the 'fourth world', the desolate regions of the world where people rarely ever come and rarely ever stay.
Yet the fact that Will and Hand don't succeed is really the success of the story. It is not about the destinations, or the journey there, but about the things that lie in the past. Will's rememberance of his childhood are the most beautiful passages. It is enjoyable just to be in the company of the characters and the antics they pull. Eggers' paints a beautiful picture, if less loudly innovative, at least as heartbreaking and emotional as his memoir. And even if it is a little modernistic or existentialistic, Eggers' combination of such with his own style of wit and irony make it genuine. It is definately a superbly crafted work.

Reviews for hardcover are unjust, this is not the same book.

If your reading the reviews of this book and at the bottom it says "Refers to the Hardcover Edition", then you should pay no attention to that review. The actual text of the book is different in the paperback edition than in the hardcover. As you can't actually get the hardcover anymore on Amazon.com, the hardcover review is pretty worthless. This book was originally released under the same title as now, but it was recently rereleased under the name SACRAMENT, but only available through the publisher, McSweeney's. SACRAMENT contained additional text written by a completely different narrator, and it actually turns the novel into something quite different.
Sure, the novel does get to a point where it becomes a series of foils and mishaps in various countries, but it is at that point, about two-thirds of the way into the book, that the new material takes place. This new material provides a completely different context for the actions that take place throughout the rest of the book. In a way, it makes the story more metafictional than I imagine it originally was.
The paperback edition contains the additional text, about twenty pages or so, that was not in the hardcover printing of the novel. So, for those of you who have only read the hardcover edition, I would recommend rereading, since the book is actually quite different than when you probably read it. If you're interested in it and thinking about reading it, I would highly recommend this work.
Eggers is more popularly known nowadays for his skills as a publisher of some of the greatest writing since the turn of the century, and editor of McSweeney's Quarterly, among other things. It's been a long time since his first book, and until I read this I thought his own work would simply be thrown by the wayside. This book proves, however, that he is at the forefront of the best writing being done today, and I would say that this is the most original work I've read in a long time, and I read books for a living. It's greatness in relation to modern fiction is surpassed perhaps only by Jeffrey Eugenides' MIDDLESEX, which is too great for words.
In other words, read this book, it is beautiful and worthy of a religious amount of attention.

I think Eggers is great, but really, this book...

I've watched Dave Eggers rise to fame from our shared corner of the world, and I thought his first novel was brilliant, but something has happened to Eggers' writing in this novel. What was once quirky and refreshing about his writing seems more like artifice in this book. More often than not, Eggers' writing and plot twists are less profound than they are show-offy. While I was reading the book, I felt like Eggers was a two-year-old prancing around in front of the reading public saying, "Look at me! Aren't I cute? Look at the adorable tricks I can do!"
Admittedly, some of Eggers' literary tricks in this book are cute, and there are moments of touching and hilarious prose. (My favorite line: "I opened my mouth but couldn't think of any way to answer. Someone was using my head to power a coffeemaker.")
But in the end, the plot feels too forced, the writing too self-conscious. Dave Eggers is a good writer. This book doesn't, sadly, fully reflect that. _

Brief verse pares Tubman's experiences to their essence. The text seems simple ("Harriet, Harriet, / Born a slave, / Work for your master, / From your cradle / To your grave"), yet it resonates with a wealth of emotions--anger, fear, jubilation. The rhythmic pulse of the verse conveys constant danger, the howl of a bloodhound pack closing in. This moving and beautiful book will stimulate interest in the artist as well as in his subject. Purchased this for my grand daughter age 7 and I loved it, thought it was a great way to introduce her to Jacob Lawrence's work and start a foundation for her art book/history library. No feed back from she or her parents as yet.

Two heroes

First published in 1968, this artistic book tells the awe-inspiring story of Harriet Tubman. It ought to be on the list of children's bestsellers, for it gives children the stories of two American heroes for the price of one. The first is the title figure, Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), who escaped from slavery but courageously returned south 19 times to lead more than 300 others to freedom. The second is Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000), who made this magnificent series of illustrations in 1939 and 1940.
The text is poetic. Early in the story, on a hot summer day in about 1820, "a group of slave children were tumbling in the sandy soil in the state of Maryland," Harriet Tubman among them. She dreamed of freedom and escaped, but returned to help others. The story builds as the selfless African-American leader risked her life many times to help others reach freedom. "Some were afraid, / But none turned back, / For close at their heels / Howled the bloodhound pack."
As the story closes, young readers find an enthralling figure of Harriet Tubman building support for the anti-slavery movement. At every convention within 500 miles, she could be found speaking in words and tones that brought tears to the eyes and sorrow to the hearts of all listeners.
Lawrence's paintings, made in tempera colors and poster paints, are poetic, too. Trained in the art workshops of Harlem in the 1930s, including the Utopia Children's House and the Harlem Art Workshop (sponsored by the New Deal), Lawrence became one of the finest African-American artists in U.S. history. His extraordinary talent was recognized when he was still relatively young.
Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he moved to Easton, Pennsylvania and then at seven to Philadelphia. At 13, Jacob moved again, to Harlem. Drawing on Bible stories and the powerful Christian sermons, often given on street corners, Lawrence remembered orators who spoke with reverence of Harriet Tubman and determined to show the African-American struggle for freedom in his art.
The Tubman series was one of Lawrence's earliest. It predated by only a couple of years the 60-panel migration series that made Lawrence's career in 1941-42. Half that series was bought by the Philips Gallery in Washington D.C. and the other half by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
But Lawrence's Tubman work is among his best. This book's only shortcoming is that it does not reproduce all of the Tubman paintings. Several were excluded and can be seen only in an art museum, or the pages of an art catalogue. But don't let that stop you. Children will find themselves doubly enriched. Alyssa A. Lappen
