About the Author

Sarah S. Long, MD, FAAP is Section Chief of Infectious Diseases at St. Christopher s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Long is also Professor of Pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Dr. Long is an associate editor of The Journal of Pediatrics and is the chief editor of the textbook Principles and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. She has received numerous teaching awards, the Distinguished Service Award of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the Clinical Teacher Award of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Award for Lifetime Contribution to Infectious Diseases Education by the Section on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Long completed her medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and her residency and fellowship at St. Christopher s Hospital for Children. She is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric infectious disease, and her principal areas of research are vaccine-preventable diseases and management of common infectious diseases in children. She sits on advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This version of Dr. Longs textbook has expanded in size including more information and more topics. I find the print a little small for my comfort but given the size of the book I'm sure that was necessary. For a pediatric ID reference this is a top choice

Caveat emptor

Do not buy this book unless you are willing to buy Primal Fuel at $100 for 30 servings. The majority of these recipes use that as a primary ingredient. I didn't find the book very useful because I wasn't going to buy that product.

From the very beginning of the book "the toad" (the author) is pushing a blender. Then almost every smoothie recipe calls for something called primal fuel. Some type of protein powder (he swears by it). There are some strange ingredients in most of these smoothies so if you don't want to be out buying up the health food store or if raw eggs are not appealing to you, don't bother. As for the kindle version mistakes a plenty! Really just not what I was looking for. I wanted a simple smoothie book with natural ingredients, not all these powders.

Packed with Superfoods, Includes Low Carb Recipes---My Mouth is Watering!

This recipe book (and I mean just the table of contents) got my mouth watering from start to finish!

In the book's intro, the author explains what low carb is: If the total carbohydrate count for a recipe is 20% or less of the total calorie count then it will be labeled low carb. Tongue in cheek, he adds, "Easy. Right?" Actually, nothing could be harder, especially for smoothies, which are traditionally packed with fruit. Yet, 18 of the smoothies match this definition!

Each of the 70 recipes contains not only the ingredients and instructions, but also the nutritional data, broken down into two categories: macronutrients (ie: fiber, sugar, protein, fat, and omega 6) and vitamins & minerals. The author explains in the intro, "The lower the omega 6 content, the better." The recipes also have a picture and comments/suggestions. The author also provides websites where you can purchase many of the ingredients. There is also an index of ingredients at the end, making this a very handy reference book.

The author explains, "Grains, legumes and dairy are not technically primal. However, we are not living in caveman times. You use a computer and refrigerator, right? Some recipes inside this book have whey protein powder, sour cream and/or yogurt. No smoothies contain legumes or grains outside of chocolate." I might add, if you are going to use dairy, sour cream and yogurt are among the least offensive and easiest to digest.

It is debatable as to whether chocolate is a Paleo food. I personally vote on the side of the author! Packed with anti-oxidants, it works, in moderation, for me! But overdo it and I get anxiety and/or insomnia, just as with caffeine. This is because of the bromothien in chocolate, which has a similar effect as caffeine.

The author wisely explains how to choose eggs safely so that they can be eaten raw. I personally can attest that if one does so, he will not get sick. I even detail in my books how to do this, and how I have eaten SEVERAL THOUSAND raw eggs without ill effect. OK, one time I did get some bloatedness and gas, but this went away in ten minutes after taking some activated charcoal tablets (which is wise to keep on hand for any kind of food poisoning). The fact is: if the egg comes from a healthy, non factory-farmed chicken, it should be no problem.

The author also includes kombucha (a fermented mushroom filled with friendly bacteria when eaten raw) in his recipes. I drink this stuff DAILY, as it aids the immune system. It's easy and ultra-inexpensive to make your own home brew. A man after my own heart, the author also includes a bit of coffee in some of the recipes.

The smoothies are wisely prepared with many super foods, foods packed with extra nutrition. These include kale, coconut butter, maca (a Peruvian root that balances hormones), cinnamon (great for stabilizing blood sugar and hence insulin), egg yolks, cacao nibs, blueberries, and more.

Some of the smoothies I can't wait to try include Mango Coconut Kombucha, Chocolate Lime Macadamia, Vanilla Ginger Blackberry Coconut, Creamy Coconut Macadamia Coffee, and more.

When people think of ancient Italy, the Romans are usually the first and last people that come to mind, but long before Rome was built by Latin speaking people, the culture of Italy was dominated by the Etruscans. Although the Etruscans may not comprise the core of most histories of the ancient Mediterranean, they exerted a profound influence on the region from the 8th-5th centuries BCE that continued to resonate for centuries after as the Romans carried on many of their traditions. Today, much of what is known about the Etruscans comes from the ancient Roman and Greek writers who had a deep respect for them but saw them as exotic and foreign. As the famous Roman philosopher Seneca wrote about the Etruscans, “Whereas we believe lightning to be released as a result of the collision of clouds, they believe that the clouds collide so as to release lightning: for as they attribute all to deity, they are led to believe not that things have a meaning insofar as they occur, but rather that they occur because they must have a meaning.”

The Etruscans referred to themselves as “Rasenna” in their own language, but the Greeks called them “Tyrrhenians” and the Romans referred to them as “Etrusci”, which is where the modern term “Etruscan” is derived (Cornell 1995, 45). As this suggests, reconstructing Etruscan history is based primarily on the Greco-Roman accounts, but other sources are utilized by modern scholars to create a more accurate picture.

Unfortunately, despite the fact the Etruscans were a literate people, their own histories have disappeared without a trace. Nevertheless, even with this lack of primary sources, the abundance of classical writings about the Etruscans and modern historical, archaeological, and art historical studies can establish an image of Etruscan history and culture that, although not complete, is enough for scholars to arrive at some important conclusions. An in-depth examination of Etruscan history and culture reveals that the Etruscans developed a culture that was as advanced as that of their Greek contemporaries and was also one that the later Romans were indebted to on many levels.

Learn about the Etruscans and learn a little about Roman culture

I found the history of the Etruscans to be pretty interesting because I knew little about them. This book is brief and concise which provides one the opportunity to learn about the Etruscans in roughly an hour or so. Depending on the archaeologists and or historians the Etruscans either influenced the Romans a little or a lot. The Imperial standards, augury, gladiatorial games, and two of earliest kings of Rome all came from the Etruscans. I found this to be a worthwhile read.

The Scientific English: A Guide for Scientists and Other Professionals is a complete, clear, and forthright book--wisely written even for nonnative writers, like me. While reading, I'm inspired by the witty epigraphs, the grammatical explanations, and the opportune examples. The authors, themselves, followed their stated guiding principles of scientific writing: (1) to educate, (2) to inform, (3) to record, and (4) to persuade.

Equally appealing is Dr. Day and Ms. Sakaduski's writing tone. Their engaging chapters on the nine "pigeonholes"; the punctuation; the redundancies and jargon; and the voice, person, and tense provide detailed and amiable explanations. For instance, in the tense usage they wrote the following: "In scientific writing, only two tenses are normally used: present and past. Occasionally, the future tense might be used, in pointing to the need for further experimentation . . . ." This advice and its examples--e.g., "Jones (2010) showed that the first quinone to be reduced is tightly bound," "Figure 1 indicates that . . . ," "Table 4 shows that . . . ," "I found," and so on, clarify how to cite and report research findings.

This book contains important scientific writing details. For example, do you know which dash is appropriate between two numbers? In pages 146-148, you'll find the answer. Also, why sometimes you have to write commas and periods inside the quotation marks and sometimes outside? Well, you'll find that that depends on the country of origin of your selected journal: American or British; in the American system, commas and periods always go inside closing quotation marks. Similarly, in the "Agreement of Subjects and Verbs" section, the authors explain why "A series of experiments was performed" and "A number of experiments were performed" are correct. Additionally, if you have doubts about the correct usage of statistical writing like "correlated with-correlated to," the proper usage, "correlated with," is on Appendix 2.

Finally, if you've been writing for a long time or just started, you'll discover the real meaning of phrases as, "It has long been known," "A definite trend is evident," "Typical results are shown," "A statistically oriented projection of the significance of these findings," "According to statistical analysis," and so on. Definitely, I'd recommend you to read this book and have it as a reference when writing your manuscripts.

One of the best I've seen for entry-level writers

I'm a medical writer, so this book is far too elementary for my use as a writer; however, as a teacher of students of English as a foreign language (EFL), I've come across few books that can match this one. I spend a lot of time in writing books, style guides and the sort, and this one takes the prize for its readability and accuracy of information. For anyone just starting out as a professional writer (you needn't be a science writer or even "professional" to benefit from this text), I say it's a must-have. Or even if you're looking to break into writing, at any level, you'll find it hard to put down. And unlike most books on grammar and writing, it is written in a style that makes for easy, enjoyable reading. So you could actually read it from cover to cover without feeling as if you've just been hit over the head with a textbook. Hands down, it's five stars!
