Beyond Pathology

I have a veritable library of books on the Enneagram. I have many books by Don Richard Riso and Helen Palmer. If you wish to have an overview of the Enneagram types and their attributes, or if you want to try typing your friends, family and work mates so that you can understand how to get along with them, their books are really good. But there is one glaring difficulty when it comes to typing yourself: their books seem to focus mainly on what is wrong or unhealthy in each type. I am at what Don Richard Riso calls "Level 1" of my type, basically the healthiest edge of the spectrum, and I could not figure out what type I was until I read this book. Instead of just going for the negative fixations, What's My Type? describes nuances, such as how the different types focus their energy into activities, things that frustrate or upset them and other relatively neutral traits. Attributes are stated in terms that you can identify with without seeming unhealthy or defective. And when it comes to the types outside of your own, each is written about in a descriptive way that helps you understand what it's like to look at the world through their lenses, both facilitating compassion and broadening your own perspective to include each type's unique value system. It does a beautiful job of exploring what can really take each personality to its highest spiritual level, rather than merely attaining psychological health. I highly recommend going on to read "My Best Self" by the same authors after you read this. It builds brilliantly and insightfully on the foundation laid by this book.

Nine Personalities Categorized by Their Basic Flaw

Kathleen V. Hurley & Theodore E. Dobson's book, "What's My Type?" offers the clearest method for understanding which of the nine of the Enneagram's personality types you actually have.

Each of the nine points on the Enneagram correspond to a numbered personality type.

Each of these nine personality types is characterized by its own unique major personality flaw. These personality types are:

1.) anger
2.) pride
3.) deceit
4.) jealousy
5.) greed
6.) fear
7.) gluttony
8.) lust
9.) sloth

Whether we care to admit it or not, we know ourselves very well. It's very hard to deny the obvious in our failings.

But don't despair that this way of viewing personality is too "negative"! It's actually a great first step toward getting to know yourself better. The clarity of Kathleen V. Hurley's & Theodore E. Dobson's method gives you a very solid, very practical understanding what you need to do to improve yourself.

Essentially, the underlying differences in the characteristics of the nine enneagram personality types are a matter of how the personality types use instinct, emotion, and thought to arrive at the sort of decisions that are typical for each of the nine personality types. ("Instinct" is knowing without knowing how you know. The authors provide this very useful description of instinct in their book.)

Of their two books on the enneagram I've read, "What's My Type?" (the first book) is better than "My Best Self." But both are useful.

For example, the second book provides a description of the 3rd personality type (whose major character flaw is deceit) that seeks to offer improvements upon the one of the first book. But at the same time their second book adds unnecessary theoretical complexity to the authors' evolving overview of what causes each personality type to have a different set of characteristics.

The 3rd personality type can be highly, intensely emotional but may forfeit emotion, including love, in pursuit of "success." In their second book, though, the authors argue that the 3rd personality type feels all emotions strongly except love (in my reading of their book). They complicate the enneagram chart by describing the 3rd personality as being sub-dividable into two groups: one sub-group that leans toward the intellect as a secondary mental faculty & the other that leans toward intuition. Their first book, "What's My Type?," avoids such theoretical entanglements.

This was the first Enneagram book I read. It was the most excellant in terms of describing the way the system works. The authors use layman words and spiritual references in ways that make you truly come to understand the sometimes wonderful and sometimes lacking personalities that make us who we are.

A very practical psychological thriller!

I enjoyed reading this book far more than I had anticipated, it is a thriller and an amazing window into the humans psyche.
Hacking the Human is a book about Social Engineering Techniques and Security Countermeasures. It should be a must read to all Physical security management, and Information security professionals, I always thought it would be really hard to map the ISO27002 controls with Social Engineering and yet the entire book is written around the ISO27001 standards this alone is worth the price (little high) of the book.

The book is divided into 3 sections
.- The Risks
.- Understanding Human Vulnerabilities
.- Countermeasures
I wish I could tell you which section or what chapter is important so you don't have to read the whole thing, but I couldn't they are all equally important. Except for some deviations away from information security topics the entire book is like a Symphony by Mozart; Mozart's question sums it all up "Which few did you have in mind, Majesty? " when told by Emperor Joseph II "Your work is ingenious. It's quality work. And there are simply too many notes, that's all. Just cut a few and it will be perfect."

You may say "....but I have read The Art of Deception by Kevin D. Mitnick (and William L. Simon)" which was a great book and also a must read to further learn the human behavior, however in comparison to the Hacking the Human they are totally different. Finally! A comprehensive book on social engineering

As a researcher of the topic, I was glad to find Mann's book on social engineering. It makes a significant contribution to the body of knowledge on the social issues of information security. This is the second book that has been truly devoted to social engineering, the first one being Kevin Mitnick's Art of Deception. Mann takes the issue further with his methodical and systematic approach.

This book has great value, as it frequently refers to standards such as ISO 27001, providing high industry relevance. The book provides a clear view to the topic with sublime clarity, explaining underlying psychological weaknesses exploited by the attackers. Hacking the Human covers all related topics on the issue, from explaining why social engineering has not received the attention it deserves to why your company is at risk, and more importantly, what you can do about it.

As we learned from Mitnick, people are the weakest link in the chain of information security. With Mann's Hacking the Human, you can make it the strongest one, the first line of defense. I gladly recommend this book to everyone interested in the topic.

"I'm consumed by longing and regret."

Back in 1987, Scott Turow's "Presumed Innocent" created a sensation. It had all of the elements that fans of legal thrillers adore: murder, adultery, courtroom pyrotechnics, and a final twist that knocked everyone's socks off. In "Innocent," it is 2007 when Turow rejoins Rusty Sabich, who is now sixty years old and has risen to become Chief Judge of the Third District Appellate Court in Kindle County. He is hoping to run for the State Supreme Court in the near future. Unfortunately, his personal life has been far less successful than his career.

Turow keeps us off balance by going back and forth in time, changing points of view, and withholding key bits of information so that he can spring a few surprises in the final chapters. "Innocent" is an intense story of how people nurse deep-seated resentments that fester for years and do inestimable damage; of family members who are afraid to tell one another the truth; of infidelity and betrayal; and ultimately, of love and redemption. Turow's courtroom scenes are mesmerizing, and he makes the complex proceedings accessible and fascinating, even for those who know little about criminal procedure.

One quibble is that Rusty's behavior does not always ring true. He is supposedly an intelligent and self-disciplined individual who has learned something from his past mistakes, but his actions in this novel are too naïve, foolish, and self-destructive to be believed. In addition, there is a bit of contrivance in the way the author sews up the threads of his narrative. Still, Turow knows how to grab our attention and hold it, and he maintains a high level of suspense throughout this intricate tale. The sharply written and sometimes earthy dialogue as well as Turow's entertaining and often dryly humorous prose keep things moving along quickly. "Innocent," as its predecessor did more than two decades ago, demonstrates how difficult it is to mete out perfect justice in an imperfect world where so many people lie to themselves and others.

In "Innocent," Scott Turow presents a sequel to his 1987 debut novel, "Presumed Innocent." Judge Rusty Sabich is accused of murder once again--but this time it is of his wife Barbara. The story is mostly told in flashbacks, from Spring 2007 when Barbara was still alive, to Fall 2008 when she mysteriously passes and Spring 2009 when court proceedings are well underway.

In Spring 2007, Judge Rusty Sabich is a happily married man, who sympathizes with his bipolar wife Barbara and shy, law-school graduate son Nat. His world is turned upside down after he starts an extra-marital affair with his former law-clerk, Anna, who is young enough to be his daughter. Complicating matters is that Judge Sabich's election to the Supreme State Court is coming up, and news of his affair can cost him not only his wife, but his career.

Fast forward a year, and Anna has broken up with Judge Rusty Sabich. Instead, she starts dating his love-struck son Nat---but is terrified of word slipping out about her past relationship with his father.

And then the unthinkable happens--Rusty Sabich is accused of murdering his wife Barbara when he doesn't react properly to her failure to get up. Instead of calling medical services, he spends twenty-four hours at her bedside in a trance-like state. By the time Barbara is finally seen, she's no longer alive. By this time, even his son Nat has trouble figuring out if Rusty is guilty or not.

Meanwhile Rusty's old nemesis from "Presumed Innocent," acting prosecuting attorney Tommy Molto, assisted by his fiery chief deputy Jim Brand, sees his chance to finally get back at Rusty by gathering enough evidence against him to bring the case to trial. A legal-thriller type court battle ensues, and takes up much of the book.

This is my first Turow book, but I thought it was a solid plot. I like court-type legal thrillers that focus on the drama of trial and strong characters. This book fits this category. We get a detailed set-up, with each chapter being told from the point of view of different characters, and their various secrets.

Twenty five Years Later

Its been almost 25 years since the ending of Presumed Innocent made it one of my ten best reads, a feeling reinforced by the Harrison Ford movie. A lot has changed in that time. I for one am now in my early 50's a and the main character Rusty has just turned 60. My view of life has changed dramatically while Rusty's world not so much. The familiarity of the continuing characters including Molto & Stern gave a comfortable ease back into the plot and new characters Nathan & Anna have depth and color. I would have liked to see more of Rustys wife though. Turow's use of a changing timeline and variable character viewpoints tended to be confusing and a cleaner way of telling the story might have helped. The story evolves into part Grishamess coutroom drama, part Law & Order, part Lifetime and part social commentary on family life in America. I am not sure in which of the genres (if any)the author was trying to write but he fails to stand out in any. That being said, I am still thankfull to Turow for the sequel and all in all an OK read.

Kepler, a Protestant, was persecuted during the counter-Reformation, lost a wife and several children to disease, saw his mother tried as a witch, and had constant financial difficulties, yet persevered in his quest for mathematical truths. In this detailed biography, both his academic work and his personal travails are carefully documented. Period portraits and images reproduced in full color and black and white as well as diagrams and maps enhance the presentation and help to hold readers' interest. Those not fully versed in the fundamentals of physics and mathematics will still be able to grasp the material presented. I’m not sure how to write this review. It’s probably going to end up being jibberish, so I apologize in advance. Also, I’m crying like a little girl as I write it, so if I misspell things and I don’t catch it on a reread, oops! To put it out there for those that don’t want to read all of my review – Wrecking Ball was very well written, the characters were very well developed, and it was overwhelmingly emotional. Does it have romance, angst, steaminess, and a bit of humor? Yep, all of the above. So if you want to know what I thought of it, that’s it. I highly recommend it. I can’t say enough great things about it. If you’re looking for a simple “Did Erin enjoy it?” Yes. Yes, I enjoyed it. If you want to know MORE than that, keep reading...

This book is about a married couple who are forced to rediscover the meaning of their marriage. Sophia has to decide if she can forgive her husband, Brandon, and continue living the life they had after finding him with another woman. After sending him away with their two daughters, she goes on a trip with her adventurous little sister, Tia. Brandon (and I’ll admit, even I) thought Tia was trying to push Sophia to move on. You see further in the book that it was quite the opposite. Tia helps Sophia realize what she wants and needs. Sophia is so strong but had let herself become something she wasn’t, as did Brandon. As heartbreaking as it was to feel how broken they both were with the separation, it was worth it in the end.

I LOVED the writing style in this book. Toler develops these characters perfectly. It’s not too much but enough that you really feel like you know them. There were just enough flashbacks for you to see how great they once were together, and that makes seeing their current state that much more bittersweet. It was also written from both pov’s, which I think helped. You don’t ever question Brandon’s love for Sophia because you KNOW he’s hurting with her.

This book shows what happens to a couple when things get comfortable. They get lazy. They stop loving as intensely as they should. After many different rude awakenings from family and friends, they have to decide for themselves if it’s worth trying to salvage their relationship. It’s intense, it’s emotional, and it’s deep.

If you remember a few months ago, Katie had a serious heart to heart with y’all through her review for Something Worth Saving by Chelsea Landon. I think this is my SWS. Wrecking Ball affected me, much more than I expected it to. I’ll be honest and say, I had forgotten what it was even about when I started it last night. Had I known, I’m not sure I would have started it. But I did and now I’m so glad I picked it up.

Wrecking Ball has stuck with me since the moment I finished. I just can’t let myself let go of this book, these characters, and their struggle. I think the reason I can’t seem to get over it or think of anything else is because it’s SO real. Without the cheating, their lives resemble my life and marriage. We aren’t unhappy. We don’t fight a lot, although we don’t necessarily agree on everything. But it’s all become very routine and…boring. We’re comfortable. We have three kids and full time jobs. We go to work, pick up kids from daycare, make dinner, and put the kids in bed. I go to bed and read, or do blogging duties; he stays up and does homework or plays video games. It’s our life and not a bad life, but now I’m dissecting all of it. Every look, every small detail that could hold more of a meaning than I thought. I want it to be less comfortable and more what it used to be. I want that intense love back.

I’ve gone way off and no one cares about my marriage, so I’ll just say this. Wrecking Ball affected me. It changed me. It IS my life, and it feels like I learned the lessons with the characters right along with them. A book has never done this to me before, so that must mean something, right? It will forever mean something to me because it made me step back and realize what was going on right in front of my face, every single day.

Overall, it’s reality for SO many of us. B.N. Toler digs deep and grabs your emotions with a grip that won’t let go. She wrote a beautiful novel that will have me reeling for months, and I love that a hobby I enjoy is able to do that for me. It’s emotional, heartbreaking, and motivating all in one. Bravo Toler, Bravo.
