The author does not look upon sociology as a theoretical analysis of society, noras a sort of social psychology; neither does he consider it merely the study of some of our social problems. He looks upon sociology as a broader and deeper subject than any of these conceptions of the past, as a subject that comprises in a related fashion these different specific phases. The plan of the book is to give the student who takes but one course in sociology a general idea of the whole science, and to give to the student who tontinues the subject a foundation for advanced work. Emphasis is placed upon those subjects that will be of greatest practical value to the student, such as immigration, the race question, the family, poverty, and crime, altho other phases of the science, such as the evolution of institutions and the general principles of social theory, are not neglected. At the end of each chapter is given a list of reading references, so that the text can be used in a one term course with a limited amount of outside reading, and in a two terms course with more extended use of collateral readings. Chapter fourteen, on education, can easily be omitted if time is limited. Because of the general nature of the text and because much of the subject matter is common property, the author has made no attempt to refer to the original source of the information given; all the leading books used will be found in the bibliography at the end. About the Author
Martha P. Nochimson has taught in the Department of Film and Television at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, and at Mercy College, where she developed and chaired a program in Film Studies, and she is the author of four other books, including her internationally acclaimed studies The Passion of David Lynch: Wild at Heart in Hollywood (1997); Dying to Belong: Gangster Movies in Hollywood and Hong Kong (Wiley-Blackwell, 2007); No End to Her: Soap Opera and the Female Subject; and Screen Couple Chemistry: The Power of 2. Dr. Nochimson has been invited to appear on television in her capacity as a film and media critic in the United States, Canada, and France, and she has covered international film festivals in New York, Montreal, and Istanbul for over a decade. Good Middle of the Road Book

I was assigned this book for an undergraduate Cinema Studies class. I haven't taken the class yet, so I don't know how much it will be used, but I have already read it to be prepared. I found it to be interesting, informative and easy to read. I think it was a great introduction to World Cinema. It never gave too much away about the films it discussed, so you can still watch them and not know every plot point, but still be aware of some aspects of the filmmaking that make studying the film easier. The book is divided by country (six I believe) with their history around the start of film and then sections on films and directors the writer feels are canons of film in that country. Then there is a section in the back with a closer look at five influential filmmakers. I think the history section of each country is the best part. It really helps you understand what was going on at the time and what influenced the filmmakers. I was already very interested in world cinema, so a lot of it was a review, but I still learned a lot too. It is easy to understand which is a plus. Many of the academic writings on cinema are very hard to understand; very cryptic. I would encourage anyone that is not already well versed in world cinema to start with this book; it maybe a little too simple for a graduate level class... but maybe not, I'm not there yet!

Loved the class this book was for!

The class that this book was for really opened my eyes to the cinematic techniques that are used by directors all around the world. I found the book informative. At least, enough to skim over it in the 10 minutes before class and form an idea worthy of rambling about for weekly timed writings. The class itself was enjoyable. If your are taking CMLT280 at UMD, I recommend buying this book if you want to do well.

It is not totally useless. However

This book is a collection of Android App sample code using Android Studio. At this time, i.e., early 2015, this book is one of the few books that use Android Studio as the development tool for the sample code. Most of the code, if not all, work. However, this book does not provide enough explanation about the material required for developers to learn how to develop android applications. Some examples, such as Chapter 14 Multi-Pane Layouts, only use the Android Studio template to generate the app and NOTHING MORE THAN that. That was a definitely turn off. I meant it--absolutely no more than the code generated by Android Studio. If you strongly need to follow a book to learn how to develop Android Applications based on Android Studio 1.0 in early 2015, you can purchase this book and follow the first couple of chapters to set up the environment and use the rest of the book as code examples. It is not totally useless. However, you may need to browse develper.android.com to find more resources online. You can find more working examples by purchasing "Beginning Android 4 Application Development" authored by Wei-Meng Lee and use Import Android Applications (Eclipse (ADT), or Gradle, etc.) option to open the examples.

In summary, this book is not totally useless. But for a beginner, only the first couple of chapters for setting up the Android Studio environment are good for you. There is extremely little to no explanation in this book.
