For most clients with a trauma history, especially those grappling with dissociation, living inside their own skin is challenging. Most clients struggle between sessions, needing the connection to the therapist in order to feel contained. Our trauma clients tread water between therapy sessions, often feeling incapacitated and lost in figuring out a way to help themselves. The results of therapy once or twice a week can fade quickly when faced with the rest of the hours of a week besieged with overwhelming anxiety or despair. The skills in this manual are the foundation of the Becoming Safely Embodied experiential skill set developed to help clients learn step by step ways of being with themselves, especially when they are on their own, between therapy sessions. Nine easy to learn skills are presented and can easily be taught in a group format or to individual clients. Described for groups, the skills can be used individually. In addition there is curriculum for how to open and close the group.

Healing from complex trauma with embodiment and compassion

I have had the privilege of attending workshops at which Deirdre Fay has taught the Becoming Safely Embodied skills to groups of therapists. What is striking is Deirdre's capacity to abstract the essence, to simplify and clarify, to identify the core of what is helpful in healing - and to present it in a way which is readily accessible. In person her compassion, and the strength of her commitment to the relief of suffering, are inspiring. They are a tribute to her many hours of meditation practice, her clinical experience of treating people who have survived severe trauma, and her theoretical knowledge acquired through different treatment modalities.
Much of this personal and professional depth comes through in the manual, making it easy to read yet profound. Structural dissociation, internal family systems, sensorimotor psychotherapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness and yoga practices are all referenced and acknowledged; but the book focuses on the practical application of key elements of these rather than the conceptual underpinnings. It is a book for providing trauma survivors with techniques for understanding the emotional rollercoaster - or chronic numbing - of their life and with techniques for regulating these extremes of internal experience. Although it is mainly written for therapists, who will be teaching the skills to groups, the numerous exercises - and the handouts describing these - make it very useful for many patients and clients. Time between therapy appointments can be long, lonely, and distressing; it is necessary for many people to have ways of working on the distress themselves. Identifying triggers through a thought/feeling/sensation analysis; getting to know parts whose affect can be overwhelming; regulating the body's arousal level; rescripting a narrative account of events; practising compassion for the self - all can make the difference between seeking a potentially harmful regulator of distress and feeling able to cope with and control that distress.
This book will contain something for all clinicians treating complex trauma who are open to receiving wisdom irrespective of therapy modality. It also provides ideas for survivors of adverse early experiences who want to increase their understanding of the manifestations of their distress. The comprehension of shared patterns of response reduces isolation. The feeling of belonging reduces shame. Bringing the thinking parts of the brain to focus, with compassion, on the somatic and emotional residues of the trauma until they lose their power to hurt promotes long-term healing and has the potential to transform living.
