Wendy Ward Hoffer is the author of Minds on Mathematics and Science as Thinking, along with the forthcoming Cultivating STEM Identities. She serves as Senior Director of Education for the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), and travels nationally to provide professional learning to math and science teachers at all levels. She is passionate about promoting rich thinking in all content areas, especially math and science. Lots of good strategies

This book goes deeper than just a list of activities or how-to's. It sets forth a coherent approach to increasing student engagement and depth of learning, and then takes you through the entire process of how to restructure your teaching practice in light of that approach, providing strategies to make each component work.
I'll be honest: I am not sure I'm going to use every piece of the workshop approach in my classroom on a regular basis. There are some aspects of what is described that I'm just not sure are workable for me in my setting. But this was a summer when I had decided that I needed to revamp my teaching in some fundamental ways to keep up with our changing student populations, changing standards, and changing 21st-century needs -- and this book contributed a lot to helping me re-think how I can do what I do better. There is enough depth and richness there that even if you don't adopt it 100%, you can still find a lot of value.

Wendy's book is a fabulous book for helping teachers navigate the sometimes messy learning experiences that should be taking place in every math classroom. Wendy gives practical advice for setting up, carrying out, and reinforcing math workshop in the math classroom. She gives great suggestions for creating a safe learning community with a high level of accountability.I highly recommend this book to any math educator, both new and seasoned,who is interested in teaching in a way that research is showing works in the math classroom.
