Jacob Reckless returns once again to the Mirrorworld--filled with profound characters, extraordinary creatures, and epic life-or-death treasure hunts that could only come from the mind of the master storyteller of our generation, Cornelia Funke.
Jacob Reckless has only a few months left to live. He's tried everything to shake the Fairy curse that traded his life for his brother's--legends such as the All-Healing Apple, the Well of Eternal Youth, the blood of a northern Djinn. And yet hope after hope is extinguished. After months of fruitless searching, Jacob journeys through his father's mirror one final time to deliver the bad news to Fox.
But there they hear of one last possibility--an item so legendary that not even Mirrorworlders believe it exists: a crossbow that can kill thousands, or heal one, when shot through the heart. But a Goyl treasure hunter is also searching for the prized crossbow. Jacob must find it first--and somehow convince Fox to do whatever it takes to save him.

Gr 7-10-After saving his younger brother Will's life in Reckless (Little, Brown, 2010), Jacob Reckless now has to save his own. With only months to live after being cursed, he searches for the Witch Slayer's crossbow, rumored to give life instead of death when it's used out of love. He is competing for the crossbow against ruthless fellow treasure hunter Nerron; a stone onyx, Goyl, who's saddled with a spoiled prince; and other unwelcome companions on his quest. A map helps readers track Jacob and Fox, the lovely shape-shifting human/vixen who loves him, as they desperately search all around Mirrorworld while encountering such familiar fairy-tale characters as Bluebeard. The action lags a bit when it's interrupted by descriptions of this fantasy world's unique inhabitants and history, but it reads quickly because of its many short chapters. Jacob's and Fox's personalities remain a bit flat because the plot takes precedence, although more is revealed about Fox's background than in the previous book. Jacob's continued inability to express his love for her lends poignancy to their close relationship, which is in danger of being cut short. Recognizable fairy-tale lore such as poisoning by the "Snow White method" and intriguing characters like mysterious Norebo Earlking will keep readers waiting for the next book in the series. Recommended reading for fans of Reckless and for readers who like reimagined fairy tales set in a unique world.-Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trentonα(c) Copyright 2011. Urgency meets desperation in this fantasy adventure story, translated from the German, as Jacob and Fox seek the legendary crossbow that they hope will save Jacob’s life. But they must find it before a fairy’s curse takes its mortal toll, and only if Fox can summon the courage to shoot the magical artifact. In this sequel to Reckless (2010), Jacob and Fox race against time, death, and a rival band of treasure hunters who are equally determined to steal the crossbow. Along the way, shape-shifting Fox is trapped by a Bluebeard figure, while Jacob must deal with intense pain as his life is magically bitten away by unseen forces. Readers drawn to the first book by its nonstop adventure and fairy tale–based elements will find more of the same here, while the main characters are somewhat more fully drawn and sympathetic. The ending leaves enough unresolved questions to ensure that another sequel will follow in the dark, enigmatic Mirrorworld series. Grades 7-10. --Carolyn Phelan
Review
Praise for Fearless:
* Adroitly building on layers of European fairy tale, Funke's original, rapid-fire narrative fearlessly transports Jacob and a bevy of ominous, multifaceted fantastical characters through a dark, decaying landscape in which death waits and honor is rare. Provocative, harrowing, engrossing."―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Excellent sequel
By Debra L. Martin
This is the second book in the Mirrorworld series and the stakes are higher than ever. Jacob Reckless has saved his brother from the harsh life as the Jade Goyl, but at a terrible cost, his life for his brother's. The Dark Fairy has released a black moth that has settled in Jacob's chest and little by little steals Jacob's life force. He is in a race against time to find the cure from the Dark Fairy's curse. As Jacob and his ever present companion Fox search for the only magical item he hasn't tried to lift the curse, the Crossbow, purported to lift a fairy curse with a bolt through his heart, he finds himself in stiff competition with another treasure hunter, Nerron, the "Bastard" Goyl.
The story is full of anguish, fear, heartache and love as Jacob and Fox realize how important they are to each other. Their feelings and undying support propel the story forward through one crisis after another. The magical world that Ms. Funke has created is inventive and exciting. There are so many twists and turns in the story that you'll be holding your breath to see if Jacob can find the crossbow before the Dark Fairy curse finally kills him. There is a cliff hanger at the end and I'll be eagerly awaiting the next volume to find out what happens to Jacob and Fox.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

An amazing fantasy must-read!
By Ashley Reads Books
This book really surprised me, because even though I was already a big fan of Cornelia Funke's work, I had mostly read more of her children's books. Fearless is proof that Ms. Funke is not only capable of writing wonderful stories for children, she can also compose detailed, sophisticated fantasy for teens as well.
The plot is set in a world named Mirrorworld, which the main character Jacob Reckless is able to enter through an enchanted mirror indeed, linking the human world and the magical realm. After a dangerous adventure in which Jacob rescued his younger brother from a permanent life in Mirrorworld (all that happened in the first book of the series, Reckless), Jacob now realizes that the price he paid in exchange for his brother's life was his own. With a moth on his heart as a result of a bitter fairy's curse, he now has only a short amount of time to live before the moth bites four times, condemning him to death. Searching frantically for a cure, he and his close friend Fox spend what could be Jacob's final days looking for an nonexistent reparation. Until they find out about a magic crossbow that could either kill millions... or save his life.
Truth: I had never read the first book before reading this one. It wasn't until I had bought Fearless that I discovered it was the second book in a series. However, despite my confusion with the complicated titles of the mythical creatures, it was still understandable even if you've never read Reckless before.
One thing I especially liked was the realism of the characters. In real life, no one's perfect, and the same applies to the main characters, Jacob and Fox. (I'll try not to give too much away.) Jacob's bravery helps him protect the ones he loves; however his pride also makes him turn down necessary help in his times of need. As with Fox, she is always courageous, intelligent, and extremely selfless, willing to risk her life to help Jacob on his dangerous pursuit. Also, not every "bad guy" is entirely evil, and while you see the greedy and vicious side of the antagonist in this story, you're also able to learn about his childhood and what made him what he is. His vulnerabilities are shown as well, adding to the point that he has his sympathetic features like any other living being.
Good parts: Fox is every bit the female hero in most YA novels these days. She's a Katniss Everdeen, Hermione Granger, any heroine that incorporates bravery, knowledge, and selflessness into saving the day. Actually, I would even say that Fox's role may be even bigger than Jacob's in the fact that she possesses certain positive traits that Jacob lacks. She goes through the same hardships that Jacob goes through and more, but always finds hope and sees a better way out of the current problem they're facing.
Not-so-good parts: The amount of made-up content in this book can be quite confusing at times. Unless you've read the first book, perhaps, you probably won't know what species such as Fir Darrigs, Goyls, or Watermen are. The mythical reasoning and the witches' tendency to crave blood as payment for services can also be quite disturbing for some readers.
Fearless was a very enjoying read for me. I was unable to put the book down, and the words basically transported me to Mirrorworld to live the adventure with Jacob and Fox. If you aren't exactly a fan of fantasy, I would recommend picking up one of Funke's other novels instead, such as The Thief Lord or the Inkheart trilogy. But if you are, you will definitely discover something very special in Fearless that you won't find anywhere else.

Can You Be Fearless?
By Crossroad Reviews
Ok so for one thing when I grabbed this from Night Owl Reviews I didn't realize that it was a book 2. Oops. I think I need to pay better attention. The good thing was that I have everything from this author so I already had book 1 laying around YAY! So I quickly read Reckless and then picked up Fearless and I was so not disappointed. This book is about a boy named Jacob who found a mirror in his missing father's study that allows him to travel to another world that if full of magic. In the first book Reckless, Jacob's brother followed him and was almost turned into a Goyl which is creature made of stone like a Gargoyle. Fearless is a fast paced book that I finished in about a day or so. It is filled with fairy tale legends and Jacob is on the look for one that not even the inhabitants of Mirrorworld believe that it is real. I loved the romance in the book didn't take priority over the story itself since Jacob is on borrowed time. The front of the book says that this is a companion book to Reckless but I don't think I would have liked it as much if I hadn't read book 1. There is a massive cliff hanger at the end of Fearless that will make you drool until book 3 comes out. So I cant wait for more. These books I would recommend these books for ages 9 and up.
I recieved a copy of this book for free for an honest review.
